Obituary

Andrea Volinskypassed away on August 17, 2019, after a 15-month battle with glioblastoma multiforme. Although she knew the statistics, Andy felt she could beat the disease if she put all of her time and effort into treatment. Despite many months of weekly visits to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston for treatment and participation in a drug trial, she could not conquer the disease and died at her mother's home in Lebanon, surrounded by her loving family and friends.

Andrea Sue Ligeti was born on October 6, 1953 in Far Rockaway, New York, the second child of Irving and Gloria (McLemore) Ligeti. She lived in Far Rockaway until she was 10 years old, in close proximity to her many aunts, uncles and cousins. Her father loved to fish and the family spent many weekends on the ocean south of Long Island. In the early 1960s, the family was introduced to skiing and fell in love with the sport. They spent every winter weekend traveling around New England to try many different ski areas. Andy's father decided to sell his plumbing business in Far Rockaway and move the family to Sherburne, Vermont, where he built the Pico Peak Ski Lodge, right at the base of the Pico Peak ski area. Andy met Reid Zabski while attending Woodstock Union High School and they married in 1972. In 1973, Reid and Andy moved to New Brunswick, Canada, and lived right on the shore of Fundy Bay. In those days, you could put four lines in the water and barely keep up pulling flounder into the boat.

In 1982, they moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire to work at the Higbea Motel, which her parents had just built on Route 120, next to Landers Restaurant. She and Reid divorced in 1989. In 1990, she teamed up with Jim Volinsky to help run his busy construction business. Andy operated Andrea Zabski Real Estate for many years to facilitate the buying and selling of properties for the many spec houses they built around the Upper Valley.

In 1999, Andy and Jim decided to try something new. They purchased the Putnam Florist building on Washington Street in Claremont, New Hampshire and created Scoop City, an ice cream shop, and LaundryLand Laundromat on the property. The ice cream shop quickly added food to the menu and the name changed to Scoop City Grill. Andy was a fabulous cook and Scoop City was widely known for its delicious menu items. Many customers came long distances for their favorite fresh seafood dishes. Jim and Andy sold their businesses in 2017 and enjoyed their retirement for almost a year before her diagnosis.

Andy and Jim hiked and skied all over the country. Always looking for fresh powder, they had some memorable "steep and deep" adventures, skiing in the trees in California, Colorado and Utah. Andy was always working to impart a love of the outdoors to her grandchildren. Skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking were favorite activities with them. She worked on their interest in cooking as well, letting them create endless beautiful "dishes," though some were certainly not edible!

Andy was predeceased by her father Irving and her brother Robert (Bobby). She was also predeceased by her first husband Reid. She leaves her mother Gloria; her husband and best friend Jim; her son Jesse Zabski and his wife Lisa of Plainfield, NH; her step-daughters Sarah Volinsky of Richmond, VT and Leila Volinsky of Hampton, NH; her sister-in-law Wendy Ligeti and nephew Noah Ligeti of Worcester, MA; her grandchildren Anya Zabski, Julia Zabski, and Avery Duvall; Anya and Julia's mother Amanda Parker; her aunts Dorothy Simon and Fern Mulholland; and many cousins.

Andy was an amazing person with tremendous drive and organizational skills. If called upon, she could have run a country! She will be missed for her love and compassion, her energy and creativity, her sometimes annoying honesty and directness, and her dedication and generosity to her family. We will miss her greatly, but have many years of great experiences and memories to share that will bring smiles to all of us.

We would like to thank the many people who have helped us along this difficult journey: David Reardon, MD and Jennifer Stekanik, ARNP at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, who always helped in our decision-making and gave Andy the very best care; Lynn Collachio, RN, the infusion nurse we saw most often during the drug trial at Dana-Farber, who always managed to bring cheerfulness into our day; Sheila Batchelder, MD and Andrew Forrest, MD at Alice Peck Day Hospital, who gave Andy such warm and personal concern and helped us with important decisions; the amazingly skilled and talented staff at Mount Ascutney Hospital Outpatient Physical Therapy Department, who made sure Andy kept her abilities at their highest level; the staff at Bayada Hospice, including Autumn Thurston, LNA, who got to know Andy and became a regular visitor in our home, and especially Heather Huntley, RN and Nancy Kennedy, RN, who provided constant support, advice, medical care, and comfort to all of us during the later stages of Andy's disease; and Barbara Sweet, our friend and caregiver, who made so much time available for Andy and gave her such kind and gentle care, and became a member of our family.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
