Anne Tilghman Chaltain93, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.

Anne was born in Cambridge, Maryland on January 17, 1920, daughter to Aylmer and Oma (Christopher) Tilghman. Proud to be born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Anne moved to Bronxville, New York when she married her beloved husband, Victor Hugo Chaltain. Anne and Vic raised their two children, Vic, Jr. and Annie in Bronxville where they enjoyed many happy years.

Anne ("Gram" to her family and close friends in the Upper Valley) and Vic ("Big Vic" and "Grandad" to the family) planned to move to New Hampshire so they could be nearer to their son and two youngest grandchildren. Sadly, Big Vic passed away shortly before the move. So Anne came north by herself and found not only a new home but also a wide circle of new friends at Harvest Hill Retirement community, including several members of the very fine staff to whom we are indebted for their love and tender care of Anne, especially in the last months of her life.

Anne's new life in the Upper Valley gave her great joy. She loved going to her grandchildren's school and sporting activities, spending time with her beloved son, Vic and going to events at the Hopkins Center with her daughter-in-law with whom she enjoyed a close friendship. Enormously well-read, Anne enjoyed her NY Times, a wide range of biographies, her book club "reads" and of course, jazz which she loved so much. Disciplined and precise, Anne was a pillar of strength for the family; traits that were called upon when she tragically lost her son Vic who passed away six years ago.

After the loss of her two beloved Vic's, this proud Chaltain family matriarch's focus shifted to her daughter, Annie, her grandchildren and later, to her great grandchildren as well. Anne always looked forward to Annie's trip up north. Guarding her precious time with Annie, they visited their favorite haunts - King Arthur Flour and Farm-Way - and did a myriad of chores like moving her clothes in and out of storage. Those trips became a lifeline for Gram; a lifeline to what she valued so highly – her own children and husband. Gram also had a special love for all babies and though it became hard for her to travel to see her own babies – her great grandchildren - she delighted in seeing pictures and videos of each and every one of them.

Anne is survived by her much-loved daughter, Anne Chaltain of Frederick, MD, her cherished grandchildren: Sam Chaltain and his wife, Sarah Margon of Washington, D.C.: Kate Chaltain and her husband Eric Schwarz of New York, NY: Grady Chaltain of Hanover, NH: Tori Chaltain of Hanover, NH; her treasured three great grandchildren: Leo and Isaac of Washington, D.C and Poppy Schwarz of New York, NY: and her daughter-in-law and "partner in crime," Aileen Chaltain of Hanover, NH.

The family wishes to express its deepest gratitude to Dr. Brian Lombardo, her primary care physician for many years, and to the doctors and nurses at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, especially Dr. Eric Henderson, and the nurses in 3W and the intensive care units - true "angels" whose gentle hands and compassionate spirits fought hard to keep Gram going over her last weeks of her life.

Family burial services for Anne will be held at Kensico Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, NY and at Pine Knoll Cemetery in Hanover, NH at a future date to be determined by the family.
