Arthur Lewis Wood(who was always called "Woody"), 98, died March 20, 2011 at Kendal at Hanover. Woody was born September 19, 1912, in Portland, Oregon, the son of Arthur Evans Wood and Julie Bishop Wood.
His youth was largely spent in Ann Arbor, Michigan after his professor father moved from Reed College to the University of Michigan. Following high school in Ann Arbor, Woody graduated from Dartmouth, class of '34. He then went on to receive his MA from the University of Michigan and his PhD from the University of Wisconsin, specializing in sociology of law and sociology of deviant behavior. While at Wisconsin he met Helen (Heidi) Wolfe, a dance major.
They were married in 1939 and, accepting their first teaching assignments, both taught at the University of Buffalo. This was followed by Bucknell University and, five years later, the University of Connecticut where they stayed until Woody's retirement in 1976.
All through his teaching career Woody accepted various visiting professorships. He spent a year at the University of California, Davis; another year the University of Arizona; and a third in Melbourne, Australia. He also had a Fulbright Fellowship in Sri Lanka. He also published a number of articles within his specialty.
On retirement in 1976 Woody and Heidi moved to Hanover and 15 years later entered Kendal. All through the years they spent as much time as possible at their home in South Chatham, New Hampshire where they enjoyed swimming and mountain climbing. Woody had built the cottage as a teenager and they expanded it over the years.
Chance meetings with Woody were a delight. Always smiling, always interested in others, each encounter left one feeling uplifted by his warmth and upbeat approach to life. During his last years Woody wrote many letters to the Valley News about various subjects. All espoused liberal causes about which he felt strongly.
Woody is survived by Heidi.
No service is planned at this time. Memorial gifts in Woody's name may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03766, or to the Dartmouth College Fund (be sure to specify that the gift should be used for student financial aid), 6066 Development Office, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.
Arrangements were handled by the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
