Obituary

Barbara G. Britton (Bobbie)88, died peacefully at home on August 16, 2011 following a long illness. She was born on October 6, 1922 in Windsor, Connecticut, the daughter of Donald and Helen (Elmore) Griswold. She graduated from Colby Jr. College in New London, NH in 1943 and married Allen H. Britton Jr. in June of 1943. The couple celebrated their 68th anniversary this summer. They lived briefly in Hartland, Vermont and Cornish, New Hampshire before moving to Norwich, Vermont, where they resided for almost 50 years. Their retirement years were split between Vermont and Naples, Florida.

In addition to assisting her husband at his businesses, Barbara volunteered for numerous organizations including the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital's auxiliary, the Pink Smock and Blood Bank. She spent many Christmas mornings delivering presents to hospital patients when the hospital was located in Hanover. She also volunteered for many years at the Marion Cross School Library and was a troop leader for the Brownie and Cub Scouts.

Barbara was an avid reader and continued this practice late into her life by switching to audio books when her eyesight failed. She was also deeply devoted to her family and a wide circle of friends, both in the Upper Valley and in Naples. She took great pride in her home, gardens, and the accomplishments of her husband and children.

She is survived by her husband Allen, daughters Barbara Roth of Hanover, NH and Linda Nitschelm and her husband Fred of Wellesley, MA, and a son Doug and his wife Katharine of Norwich, VT; Grandchildren Rob Roth and his wife Stephanie, Melissa Roberts and her husband Dan, Stacey Fiore and her husband Adam, Todd Nitschelm and his fiancee Tia Hoff, and Jeffrey Britton; and great-grandchildren, Briden Roth, Ethan Fiore, and Lucas Fiore.

There will be a private family service.
