Obituary

Bernice Squires Cohenof Hanover, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 9, 2014 at her home at Wheelock Terrace. She was 99 years old and was surrounded by her children Leila Cohen (Howard Goldblatt) of North Bethesda, Maryland and Norman Cohen (Barbara Sheinberg) of Juneau, Alaska. She also leaves two grandchildren, Sara Mollie Cohen of Svalbard, Norway and Aaron Michael Cohen of Juneau.

Mrs. Cohen was born on December 4, 1914 in Thompsonville, CT to Harry and Mollie Squires. She graduated from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY in 1936 with a degree in Secretarial Sciences. She worked in her family's business, Esquire Gas Company in Thompsonville and during World War II drove in the motor corps.

In 1947, Mrs. Cohen married I. Mayo Cohen and moved to Willimantic, CT. They were married for 47 years and enjoyed world travel, Dartmouth sports, and being part of the community. Mrs. Cohen worked as a substitute teacher at Windham High School, was active in the Temple B'nai Israel in Willimantic, Hadassah, served as President of the synagogue Sisterhood, and was in the Women's Auxilliary of the Windham Community Memorial Hospital.

In 1984, Bernice and Mayo moved to Hanover to be near the college that they both loved and to be able to attend sporting and other events. They were strong supporters of the Dartmouth women's basketball team and entertained the team yearly at their home. Bernice also served many years as editor of the '34 newsletter and as a volunteer at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital working at the information desk. Her generosity and friendliness led her to open her home to young people looking for temporary housing in the Hanover area. Over the years she housed students from Holland, Hungary, and summer Opera North participants.

Services will be Friday, January 10th at 1 pm at the Roth Center for Jewish Life (5 Occom Ridge) followed by internment at the Upper Valley Jewish Community cemetery in Lebanon. If desired, contributions can be made to the Upper Valley Jewish Community.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
