Carl O. Larson, Jr.81, died on October 2, 2015. He was born March 17, 1934 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Carl Oscar and Esther Nygren Larson and grew up in Swampscott, MA.
Carl graduated from Yale University in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, followed by a master's degree in mechanical engineering from University of Connecticut in 1962. His long career at Electric Noat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut, culminated with his serving as Director of Nuclear Engineering.
After raising three children in their Stonington, Connecticut home, Carl and his wife Jane Larson retired to Lyme, New Hampshire, where they also raised their grandson, Erik Larson. Jane passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in 2000. In 2002, Carl married Evva Meyer Larson, a long-time acquaintance, of Noank, Connecticut, and they lived in Lyme before down-sizing to Lebanon, NH in 2010.
Carl was very involved in community affairs in Lyme and the Upper Valley. He was a member of Lyme's Those Guys, and Lyme's Budget Committee, was Trustee of the Trust funds in Lyme for several terms, and Treasurer of the Upper Valley Ship Modelers Guild to name a few.
Carl was a devoted husband and father, and he strongly valued education. While at Electric Boat, he facilitated an engineering mentoring program between professional engineers and community youth through the Thames Science Center, New London, CT. During retirement, he became deeply involved with Osher Institute of Lifelong Education at Dartmouth College, enrolling in several classes every term and serving as the organization's president from 2007-2009.
Carl is survived by his wife, Evva, his children David Larson, Scott Larson, and Amy Rhodes; grandchildren Melanie Robinson, Erik Larson, Sylvia Rhodes, and Linnea Rhodes; two sisters, June Beckwith and Carol Dyer; a brother, Richard Larson; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two sisters, Edith Breed and Ethyl Kolesar.
A memorial service will be held at the Lyme Congregational Church on October 16th at 11am. In lieu of flowers friends may make contributions to The Memorial Fund, Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth College, 7 Lebanon Street, Suite 107, Hanover, NH 03755-2112.
