Carol Dowa long-time and beloved resident of Hanover, died on November 17, nearly a month after her 83rd Birthday. She celebrated her birthday this year with the nursing staff and friends on the third floor of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center where she was recovering from a fall and an illness that was diagnosed while she was in the hospital.

Carol moved to Hanover from the Laconia State School, Laconia, New Hampshire in December 1973 after twenty-two years of living there"€"she never looked back. She was relocated from Laconia State School to work in the Upper Valley Training Center's Housekeeping program and was employed by the Hanover Inn, Hanover, New Hampshire. Carol worked as a chambermaid for many years there and frequented local restaurants, the laundry matt, COOP, and bank where she, with case management support, became easily integrated into the community. After leaving the Inn, she was employed by the Hanover COOP, Sunset Motel, and the Dowd Country Inn at different points.

After living in several apartments in town, Carol found her niche at the Hanover Senior Housing where she was one of the early occupants. While living there, she helped many of the older residents age in place by doing shopping, helping with laundry, running errands, and being a good friend.

Carol had many friends from all walks of life as many came to know her. She was involved in community events and rarely missed a Dartmouth graduation, a fourth of July parade, celebrations on the green, the lighting of the Christmas tree, a party at the Hanover Senior Center, or a Friday night community dinner at the Lutheran Church.

Carol was a kind, compassionate, fun loving, and caring woman who lived a proud, productive, and satisfying life. We will miss her.
