Carolyn Cartwright Tenneyage 90, died on Tuesday, October 17th after a brief illness. She was born in Buffalo, NY and raised in Alden, NY. After high school, she went to nursing school at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. While there, she met and married Dr. S. Marsh Tenney who soon thereafter went to Shanghai as a physician in the US Navy.
Carolyn remained behind to finish her nursing training, after which she boarded a ship to Shanghai where she was reunited with her husband. While there, she worked as a nurse in a medical clinic. When all U.S. dependents were required to leave because of the impending communist takeover, she again boarded a boat alone, this time pregnant. Five months later, Marsh returned to the US reuniting with Carolyn and meeting his first-born child.
They moved to Hanover, NH in 1955 where they raised their three children. Carolyn became a community activist with a special passion for the environment, cofounding the Hanover Conservation Council. She served her community in countless other ways including as Pine Park Commissioner for many years.
Carolyn travelled the world with her family starting when her children were very young. She loved music, particularly the opera, and was an ardent gardener. At the time of her death, she was the oldest member of the Hanover Garden Club. She never lost her curiosity about all things.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Marsh in 2000. She is survived by her brother Douglas Cartwright of Hudson, NY, three children"€"Joyce Tenney Snapper and her husband Jim; Karen Tenney and her husband Tom Loring; and her son Steve Tenney. She is also survived by four granddaughters, Liliana, Kira, Emily, and Sophia, and one great granddaughter, Hazely.
