Obituary

Carolyn "Crinny" Wende Nilesdied peacefully, with her family at her side, on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 in Hanover, New Hampshire. She was on born May 24, 1939 in Buffalo, New York.

Carolyn was happily married to John Adams Niles of Mendham, New Jersey for 53 years. Together they had two children and five grandchildren. She leaves behind a son, John "Jay" Cutler Niles, (Cara Bertrand), and their children, Lily, Charlie and Isabel Niles of Marblehead, Massachusetts. She also leaves a daughter, Wende Niles Briggs, (Stephen Briggs), along with their children, Grace and Lindsay Briggs. Crinny is also survived by two nephews, Hamilton "Tony" Wende and Stephen Wende.

She is predeceased by her father and mother, Hamilton Heath Wende and Carolyn Bushnell Wende, her two brothers, Hamilton Heath Wende and Albert "Tom" Bushnell Wende, as well as an infant daughter, Ashley Bushnell Niles.

She was educated at the Elmwood Franklin School in Buffalo, New York, the Westover School (1957) in Middlebury, Connecticut, and Briarcliff Junior College (1959) in Briarcliff Manor, New York.

Crinny lived in many places. She grew up and married John in Buffalo, NY. Then they moved to Atlanta, GA, Lake Forest, IL, Cleveland, OH, Windham, VT, and Hanover, NH. In later years, they wintered in Boca Grande, FL. She made lifelong friends wherever she lived, and was affectionately known as "Crin-ball", "Screw-ball" and "The Shell Snob". Crinny is especially remembered as a magnet for fun with a passion for golf and bridge. Her friends will remember her generosity, confidential, straight-forward advice and support, along with her genuine concern for others' feelings and fierce loyalty.

Crinny most enjoyed time traveling with friends. It all began 27 years ago with a January trip to the Belize rain forest with two other couples, followed by R&R on the beach. The annual adventure continued without fail and was a highlight of her life. Other travels found Crinny and John with friends from Boca Grande, Ft. Myers, Cleveland and Hanover in China, Europe, and Small Point & Conary Island, ME.

Over the years, Crinny had many interests and activities including tennis, figure skating, gardening and cooking, as well as, volunteering as both a Pink Smock and serving on the Board of Governor's at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. She belonged to the Garrett Club in Buffalo, The Gasparilla Inn Beach & Golf Club in Boca Grande, and The Hanover Country Club. Her early Hanover years found her actively participating in the Ford Sayer Ski Program with Jay and Wende.

Celebrations in Crinny's memory are planned as follows:

"— In Hanover, NH on Saturday, November 15th, 2014 at the Top of the Hop (Hopkins Center on the Dartmouth College Campus) from 2 to 5 pm.

"— In Boca Grande, FL there will be a service in March, 2015.
