Obituary

Charles "Chuck" A. Hallett, long-time resident of River Road, Lyme, New Hampshire, died December 19th at Wheelock Terrace, Hanover. He was born in New Haven, CT on July 19, 1935, the son of Bridie (McIntyre) and Charles Hallett.

After high school, he joined the CT. National Guard and was sent to Texas and New Mexico for training. In 1958, he married Elaine Stewartson of Windsor, CT Chuck and Elaine moved to New York City to attend The New School for Social Research where he received his B.A. degree. He then received a Master's degree in English from Columbia University, and a Doctor of Fine Arts from Yale University, where he studied under John Gassner and Robert Brustein. In the early 1960's, Chuck joined the English faculty of Fordham University.

It was also during the 1960's that he and his wife discovered Lyme, when friends bought a home there. Having spent summers in Lyme for many years, they became year-round residents after Chuck retired from Fordham. He loved the people and town of Lyme, which was a total contrast to the hectic pace of New York City life. He was an active participant in several civic activities in Lyme and enjoyed the cultural activities at Dartmouth College. He also enjoyed swimming in the local pond and the Connecticut River as well as hiking and watching local birdlife. Chuck and Elaine traveled frequently to Europe, particularly Spain, Italy and the U.K.

He was a recognized authority on Shakespeare and authored many publications as well original plays, Aaron Burr (produced off Broadway in 1974) and Boris: A MELOdrama (2011).

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, and sisters and their husbands Bridie Tracy (Paul) and Diana von Hallett (Carl Amento) and special friends Cecilia Jacome and Herman Angel.

A funeral mass will be held Saturday, December 28th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Denis Catholic Church in Hanover. A reception will be held in the church hall immediately following the funeral.

There will be a private burial in the spring.
