Charles Ferdinand Mason98, a resident of Summercrest in Newport and formerly of Enfield, passed away Thursday, November 15, 2018 at the Woodlawn Care Center in Newport.
He was born to Ferdinand and Stella (Dion) Mason on July 17, 1920, in Irasburg, VT. He attended schools in Whitefield, Littleton and graduated from Hanover High School. He also spent one year at the Brattleboro Business Institute. It was while he was enrolled in Hanover High School and living on Lyme Road that he met his true love Elizabeth (Betty), who he would wed on June 12, 1943. Betty was the daughter of Fredrick and Ruth Monica who also lived on Lyme Road.
He was predeceased by his wife Betty, his parents, his sisters Margaret Karp and Arlene MacLeod and brother Paul and a son Gordon Michael.
Survivors include two daughters Judith Cote and her wife Cecile Menard, Croydon, NH, and Teresa E. McKeever and her husband Richard, Buxton, Maine, two sons Charles F. Mason and his wife Kathleen, Lakeville, Mass. and Kenneth C. Mason and his wife Susan, Lyndonville, VT. He has five Grandchildren James J. Cote and his wife Stacy, Candia, NH, Kenneth C. Mason and his wife Carol, Lyndonville, VT, Kevin B. Mason and his wife Susan T., Scarborough, Maine, Jonathan J. McKeever, Buxton, Maine, and Kathryn E. McKeever and her wife Cecelia, Buxton, Maine. He also has six Great Grandchildren Elizabeth S. Mason, Isabelle L. Cote, Grayson E. Cote, Mason J. Cote, Charles R. Mason and George N. Mason.
Charles lived his life to the fullest. He had a deep love for his family, especially for his wife Betty, who supported and loved him as a military wife and soul mate for 70 years. He loved his children and grandchildren and always made time during his day to be available to attend their sporting events and other extracurricular activities. He loved to fish, hunt, golf, read, write and was the family story teller. He loved to attend Dartmouth hockey and football games with his wife Betty. He loved helping on the Mason Farm on Hardy Hill, especially during haying and sugaring. He loved playing cards, especially a good game of cribbage with Betty, Mac and Arlene. He also wouldn't miss an all-night game of pitch on Lyme Road. He loved going to Summer Camp in Alfred, Maine and Deer Camp in Palmyra, Maine. He loved his Patriots and Yankees. He and Betty could only agree on the Yankees.
Charles was a veteran of WWII. He enlisted April 1941 and served honorably in the USAAF and Army for 22½ years and retired as a Sergeant First Class. Charles attended a number of more recent WWII dedications and activities and was a longtime supporter of Wounded Warriors.
He retired from the military in 1967 and was employed briefly by the Sanders Associates, Nashua, NH. He then relocated back to Lyme Road and began employment with the US Postal Service Center in White River Junction in 1968 and would retire after 17 years in 1985. Charles developed many friendly relationships with other employees at the postal service and they'd play cards, golfed and fished throughout VT and NH.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Summercrest for their outstanding five years of service and care for Charles. They went way above and beyond what a person would expect of a care facility and they treated him as one of the family. We would also like to thank the Woodlawn Care Center for the short period that he was there.
