Constance C. Christieof Hanover, New Hampshire, formerly of Cambridge and Lancaster, New Hampshire, died on Sunday, October 26th aged 90 after a brief illness.
She is survived by her husband Dr. Robert H. Christie, also of Hanover, her brother Richard Chenoweth, her children Kathryn Kenney, David Kenney, Tina Mulready and Murray Kenney, daughters-in-law Pamela Kenney and Lisa James, grandchildren Andrew and his wife Margaret, Megan, Sarah, Rebecca, Alice, Samuel, Matthew and Jack, and great-grandchildren Hannah, Elizabeth, Jack and Charlotte. She is also survived by her step-children Emilie, Sheelah, Rob, Colin and Bonnie and numerous nieces and nephews, including Ann Ward, Judy Friederici and Christy Chenoweth. She is predeceased by her sister Virginia Friederici and her son-in-law John Rutter. Connie was previously married for 43 years to the Reverend W. Murray Kenney of Cambridge and St. Louis, Mo. Connie would also insist on a special mention of her dog Abby, the last in a long line of faithful companions.
Connie, or "Gree" as she was affectionately known to her large and loving family, had a long, eventful life lived to the fullest. Born in Detroit in 1924, she spent her early childhood in Akron, Ohio and remained a Midwesterner in spirit her entire life. After attending the Hannah More Academy, she graduated in 1945 from Wellesley College. Connie was a staunch supporter of Wellesley College for decades, giving of her time and treasure, and had recently volunteered to chair her 70th reunion committee in 2015.
In 1948 she married W. Murray Kenney in Akron and moved to St. Louis, where he was Rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. She raised 4 children in the 1950s and 1960s, helped in the ministry of St. Mark's and was active in the Junior League, where she helped to found Head Start in that city. Her friendships formed in St. Louis, and in Hampshire, England, where she and Murray lived for a year in 1960, lasted the rest of her life.
In 1966 she and Murray moved their family to Cambridge, MA where he served as Rector of Christ Church for 20 years. Connie shortly thereafter began a successful and fulfilling career in Sales at Corning Glass Works, while helping her husband navigate the turmoil of the 60s and 70s in Harvard Square. It was during these years that Connie's love of the outdoors and New England flourished. She enjoyed extended visits to England, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand as part of Murray's "international" ministry.
Connie began a new chapter in 1989 when she met Dr. Bob Christie and moved to Lancaster, New Hampshire. She and Bob spent many happy years in the North Country and also traveled extensively over 5 continents, including memorable trips to New Zealand, East Africa, the Galapagos and Alaska.
Gree's final years were spent at Kendal in Hanover, enjoying visits from her family and becoming a member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church. Up to her last days she was a comfort and support to her extended family, a strong personality and a person of steadfast faith. She was much loved, and will be greatly
Connie's funeral was held on October 30 at St. Thomas' in Hanover. The family requests that donations in her memory, if so desired, be made to Wellesley College, a local Episcopal Church or an environmental charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
