Obituary

It is with great sorrow that his family announces the unexpected passing of Dr. David R. Eiler, age 63, of Hanover, NH. David was a respected psychiatrist who specialized in cutting-edge treatments for depression, a deeply devoted family man, a widely-read scholar and German speaker, and a discerning and eclectic collector.

David passed away after a ten-year-long battle with leukemia. He underwent a successful stem cell transplant, resulting in eight years of remission. Unexpectedly, he relapsed in late 2025, and a second transplant also resulted in a relapse. Soon after, David developed pneumonia, resulting in septic shock. He fought on for over a week, but ultimately the disease took him on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA as he was surrounded by his loving family.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Donald and Nancy Eiler, David grew up in Madison, WI. He earned an undergraduate degree from UW Madison with majors in German, Economics, and History, and entered a career in financial engineering at The MathWorks, where he met his wife, Rebecca. In subsequent years, he utilized his knowledge of finance and complex computer modeling while working for BankBoston Global Capital Markets and Entergy-Koch Trading in Houston, TX.

Never one to shy away from academic pursuits, David decided on a career change after his first child, James, was born. David and his family returned to Madison, where he earned his MD degree and his daughter, Lauren, was born. His medical class enjoyed the good fortune of having a great forty-something drummer in their med school band.

David’s compassion and desire to help people led him to a residency in psychiatry at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. He joined the department as a psychiatrist, Director of both the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Service and the IN-Esketamine Service. David spent the past few years practicing telemedicine from home.

David drew his greatest pleasure spending time with his family, and was a devoted husband and deeply loving father. He pursued an endless array of hobbies, amassing a wonderful collection of tools, medieval weaponry, books, and sci-fi memorabilia. His German Shepherd Charlie was always at his side.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca; children James and Lauren; father Don Eiler; brothers Tom and John, and John’s wife, Jane; parents-in-law Michael and Linda Soukup, Peter Smith and Jane Soukup; brother-in-law Mark Soukup and his wife, Kimberly; sister-in-law Jessica Soukup; and numerous nieces and nephews. David is predeceased by his mother, Nancy Eiler.

A graveside service at Pine Knolls Cemetery in Hanover will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to The Good Karma Project (thegoodkarmaprojectinc.org) or The Dartmouth Review (dartreview.com), two non-profits that Lauren and James have been involved with.
