Obituary

F. Elizabeth "Betsy" Barrpassed away comfortably on Sunday, April 28, 2013. She had recently celebrated her 85th birthday with her family.

Betsy grew up in Dedham, MA. Her father, George Kurtz Bird, died when she was an infant. She was raised by her mother, Kathleen Sistare, Thomas Bird, and her brother, Jim, and sister, Martha. She attended Beaver Country Day and graduated from Wheaton College in 1949.

Upon graduation, she married George F. Barr, and they made their home in Walpole, MA. He predeceased her in 1998. Betsy and George moved to the Upper Valley in 1977. She was on the altar guild at St. Thomas Church in Hanover, and drove for the Upper Valley Hostel. She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage, working in her gardens, and partaking in her book club.

Betsy enjoyed participating and watching all sports. Her true passion was golf! She played on her club's state team while living in MA, and was a regular on the Hanover links. She shared this passion with George, and they often ventured south in the spring to start the season early.

Betsy spent the last seven years of her life at Harvest Hill in Lebanon. She continued to hold her own in card games, and enjoyed the company of many good friends. She received wonderful care at Harvest Hill and the Hughes Care Unit for which her family is very grateful.

She is survived by her son, Robert Barr of Enfield, his wife Tricia, and their children: Gordon and Nola Barr, Alan Barr, and Rachel and Leif Daulaire. She is also survived by her daughter, Janet Harkey of Millis, MA, her husband Bobby, and their children: Steven Harkey and Jeffrey Harkey.

A celebration of her life will be held in the Dwinell Room at Harvest Hill at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 17. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church altar guild, 9 West Wheelock Street, Hanover, NH 03755.
