Frances Ramona Adams Stone84, a long-time resident of Hanover and West Lebanon, NH, passed away at Valley Terrace in White River Junction on Thursday, June 27th.
Fran was a beloved mother, grandmother, and a respected life-long educator. She was born on July 10th, 1928 in Barton, VT to Mr. Franklin and Mrs. Edith Landman Adams, later of St. Johnsbury, VT, where her father served as the Superintendent of Schools for thirty years.
Fran graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1946, and was also a graduate of Lyndon State Teacher's College in Lyndon, VT. Her teaching career spanned almost fifty years. She taught in Derby, VT, followed by time in Springfield and East Ryegate, VT, and East Hartford, CT. Most of her teaching career was spent as an eighth and then fourth grade teacher at the Marion Cross School in Norwich, VT. She retired in 1992.
She was a natural teacher, who loved her students, her profession, and the town of Norwich, VT. She was known as an educator who could help any kind of student. After her retirement, she continued to teach with her daughter, Terry, in the Enfield Village School.
For many years Fran was an active member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church in Lebanon, NH, where she enjoyed volunteering for community dinners and many other church events. She loved spending time with her family, friends, reading mysteries, discussing politics, and taking trips to see her many high school and college friends in St. Johnsbury, VT. She loved to drive around Vermont and knew the history of the state well.
Fran was predeceased by her husband, Richard Norman Stone, a life-long resident of Hanover, NH, who died in 1992; her parents, and her only brother, Graydon Adams, who was killed in 1944 in Holland while serving as a medic in the Third Army during World War II. She is survived by her children, Lee Ann Stone, Terry Lynn Porreca, and Scott Landman Stone, all of Lebanon, NH, and Richard Graydon Stone of Haverhill, MA; her six grandchildren, Lyndsay and Allison Porreca, Richard and Christina Stone, and Aiden and Riley Stone; her sister June Adams Sydow of Mentor, OH; a sister-in-law, Arlene LaRoe of Meriden, NH, and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held at the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover on Monday, July 1st, from 1:00-3:00 pm, and again from 6:00-8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Lebanon United Methodist Church, School Street in Lebanon on Tuesday, July 2nd, starting at 1:00 pm with a reception following the service. Burial will follow at Pine Knoll Cemetery in Hanover.
