George H. Tidman83, died on Wednesday, January 15th at his home on Bragg Hill, surrounded by his family.
George was born in Newark, NJ on September 20, 1930. Son of James B. and Natalie (Hedden) Tidman, he spent his grade and high school years in Glens Falls, NY. George then received his chemical engineering degree from Cornell in 1953. While at Cornell, he was an active member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, as well as the Varsity Crew team.
Following college, George served in the Army as an officer. He then traveled abroad for a year exploring far and wide - from India to Turkey to Japan - in a VW beetle. Upon return, he took a job at DuPont in West Virginia and then Delaware.
In 1974, he moved to Strafford, Vermont. His move prompted many interesting and diverse occupations, including proprietor of the Strafford General Store, running an antique shop on the top floor of his barn, and owner and chef of the Stone Soup Restaurant, which soon expanded to include a local ice cream shop. Upon the sale of the restaurant, he moved into teaching science at Hanover High School.
At this point in time, George met the love of his life, Lynn Dwinell. He and Lynn shared a passion for sailing, travel, tennis, exploring and caring for the woods, and, above all else, pastries and dogs. Exercise and health were a huge component of their lives together, and George participated in two Boston Marathons, a Century Bike Ride in New Mexico, and was also a constant presence at the Dartmouth Gym.
George is survived by his wife of 23 years, Lynn; sister Mary Jane of Vero Beach, FL; son Greg Tidman of Essex, VT; daughter Kelly Francis of Rowley, MA; daughter Jessica Tidman of Strafford, VT; son Wil Tidman of San Francisco, CA; and eight fantastic grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Judy of Florida.
A service will be held at the Coolidge Hotel in White River Jct., VT on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at 1:30 PM. A reception will follow at the Hotel. Please note that the place and time for the service have been changed from originally scheduled.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Family Place in Norwich, VT (where George served on the Board for many years).
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
