Obituary

Gertrude Cecilia Stigberg Daleypassed away peacefully, surrounded by her family in Hanover, NH on March 13, 2021, at age 94. She was born on December 15, 1926, the third of six children, to Gertrude McCarthy Stigberg and Bertel Conrad Stigberg in Waterbury, Connecticut.

Trudy felt she had an idyllic childhood. The Stigbergs lived on a short hillside street that led down to a river – 3 houses with 5 children in each – and the fathers had damned the river for swimming and skating. They put on shows, played in the woods and fields, climbed the apple trees and gathered around the iceman with the timid horse, who would always give a sliver of ice if you asked, and you always asked. It was a cherished childhood in the middle of the Depression, and she never felt deprived. The children of these three houses found each other in middle age and had a yearly reunion for many years.

Trudy grew up in Waterbury, attended Chase Grammar School, and graduated from Crosby High School, at age 16. She worked at the American Brass Co. in their laboratory for a year, after which, she attended New Haven Teachers College and the University of Connecticut. She met Frederick Daley at a dance and they were married in 1948. They settled in Shelton, Connecticut where Fred worked at the Sponge Rubber Products Co, and they had their first two children. They were transferred to Waterville, Quebec where Fred oversaw construction and operation of Sponge Canada. During this time they had 3 more children.

Fred and Trudy left the corporate world in 1956 and moved to Plainfield, NH, where they founded High Hope Farm, raising and breeding Arabian horses and Welsh ponies. They moved to Hanover in 1962 and spent the rest of their lives being part of the Dartmouth Class of 1944 alumni community.

Trudy's life was full with the childrens' activities; as well as with auditing courses at Dartmouth in African-American Studies and Irish Literature. She was deeply involved with the A Better Chance (ABC) program at Dartmouth.

A bottom line perfectionist at heart, Trudy freely gave constructive advice and criticism. She read fervently, loved playing bridge, and flower gardening; she was an expert knitter and seamstress, studied nutrition, known for her cooking. Summers were spent at the family cottage on Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, Massachusetts. She loved passing on the traditions there to 4th, 5th, and 6th generations. To them, Nanny was famous for her morning blueberry pancakes.

Her Irish mother and Swedish-born father led to her searches for her cousins in Europe. She found them all, and thus began visits across the water for an important part of her life. She gained her Irish-American dual citizenship shortly before she died.

She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years in 2017, her brothers, Bertel and Richard, her sisters, Lucille Kohlberg, Elizabeth and Janet, and her grandson Nicholas Roussos.

She leaves her children Deborah and (George) Roussos of Concord, NH, Frederick III and (Leigh) of Exeter, NH, Kathleen and (Richard) Olmstead of New London, NH, Richard and (Martina) of Hanover, NH and Geoffrey of Havre de Grace, MD, 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Also, sister-in-law Mary Alice Daley Wheeler of Venice, FL, cousins Valerie Meluskey of Princeton, NJ and Ford Daley of Wilder, VT; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. And a special bond with the Maurice Francis Fitzgerald family.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Parish of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday March 17, 2021. Burial to follow at Pine Knolls Cemetery Hanover. Covid restrictions will be observed. Live stream can be followed at http://www.saintdenisparish.org
