Obituary

Harry George Barnes Jr.86, died on August 9, 2012. A Foreign Service Officer of 38 years, he served in Bombay, Prague, Moscow, Kathmandu, and Bucharest, and was U.S. Ambassador to Romania, India, and Chile and Director General of the Foreign Service. After retiring from the Foreign Service in 1988, among other positions, he served as Director of the Conflict Resolution and Human Rights Programs at the Carter Center and as Chairman of the Romanian-American Enterprise Fund. Among other awards, he received the Grand Cross, Order of Bernardo O'Higgins from the government of Chile, in recognition of his contribution as Ambassador to the restoration of democracy in that country.
