Obituary

India Horton Weatherill87, formerly of Cape Elizabeth and Orr's Island, Maine, died on Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 in Hanover, NH. She was born to Alden and Beatrice Horton on April 4, 1925 in York, PA.

Initiated into the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Society at Stephens College in Columbia, MO, Mrs. Weatherill graduated in 1944 and later served as Board member and President of the Stephens College Alumnae Association. She worked in NYC for The Woman's Foundation and the Ford Foundation's Fund for the Advancement of Education.

The state of Maine became her adopted home when she married Robert H. Weatherill in 1954. They lived and raised their family there until moving to Hanover, New Hampshire in 2008. Although not employed outside the home, she was anything but idle. The skills she developed while working at the Foundations were evident in the efficient and organized manner she approached life. India contributed to her community through years of volunteer service as a Board Member of Park-Danforth Home for the Aged, State Street Church and Goodwill of Maine; a Sustaining Member of the Portland Junior League; Coordinator of Volunteers in the Cape Elizabeth school system and reading tutor at the Cape Elizabeth Schools and Rosa True School in Portland. She was a devoted caretaker to her parents, her husband's mother Elizabeth and her uncle Avery L. Horton.

An avid reader, India completed the Great Books of the Western World series and was a particular devotee of E.B. White. She remained active with a continuous book group until her move from Maine to New Hampshire and gained great perspective from her philosophical readings, applying that knowledge frequently. She faced challenges without complaint and an unwaveringly positive outlook, in turn helping others to meet their own hurdles with the benefit of her experience and knowledge. India was accomplished in numerous disciplines and was a ready teacher of the skills she had attained.

Among her many varied interests, she enjoyed nurturing her gardens in Cape Elizabeth and Orr's Island, attending Bowdoin College hockey games, picnicking with family and friends throughout Casco Bay and cruising the coast of Maine with her husband on their sailboat. She was also quite interested in and kept abreast of the latest research in nutritional science. To the great benefit of family and friends she took tremendous joy in their pursuits and accomplishments, lending support and encouragement at every step.

India is survived by her husband Robert H. Weatherill, son Charles H. Weatherill and his wife Mary of Concord, NH; daughter Elizabeth W. Fram and her husband Daniel of Waterbury Center, VT; brother Alden, Jr. and his wife Bette Horton; grandchildren, Caroline and Peter Weatherill, Lauren and Stuart Fram.

A celebration of her life will be held privately in Hanover, NH. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations in India Weatherill's memory may be made to:
