Jane Rita Stevens88, died at Kendal in Hanover, NH on December 27, 2019. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Joseph C. Stevens MD, daughters Barbara Lucy Stevens, of Key West, FL, Mary Elizabeth Stevens, of Norwich, VT, and Susan Polly Stevens, also of Norwich, VT, and grandchildren Samuel Freel, Henry Freel, Joseph Sansone, Jordan Sansone, Isabella Ackerman, and Jackson Watts.

Jane was born in Dayton, Ohio on August 08,1931 the daughter of Clifford and Polly Wurtz. She attended public schools in Oakwood, Ohio, where she was an excellent tennis player (Dayton Jr. ladies champion) and four years high school varsity player of field hockey. She graduated from Bowling Green College, Ohio, with a BS in primary grade teaching.

After a year teaching in Kettering, Ohio, and after marrying Joseph Stevens, she taught in Wilmington, Ohio, Woodbridge, CT (her favorite teaching experience), and Kirkwood, MO, until starting her family.

Though all three children were born in St. Louis, home became Hanover NH.

She enjoyed being active in the garden club, volunteering at the Mary Hitchcock hospital, tennis, golf, cross-country skiing (less so, downhill) and when Dartmouth became a co-ed college, she assisted her friends in coaching Dartmouth's first women's field hockey team.

Jane enjoyed her many friends, and they enjoyed her friendship, as well. She and her husband had especially fond memories of travelling abroad with dear friends on the rivers in France or the green
Hills and rills of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Winter days in Florida with her Grandchildren included golf cart cruises (cocktail cruises), taking joy in watching the many birds coming back to the rookery, filling the trees for their night's rest.

Her gardens, her home and she were places of beauty, comfort, hospitality and love.

A funeral service will be at St Thomas Episcopal Church, Hanover, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 11th with refreshments to follow.
