Cardell Lawe
September 4, 2024
Jean Magor Cardell Lawedied in Hanover, NH on Wednesday, September 4, 2024 at the age of 88. She was born in London, England on June 3, 1936, and was educated at home during the war until age 13, when she attended Queen's College, Harley Street, before going to Girton College, Cambridge University to read law.
Her career was in editing, first working on law journals in London, then for 28 years at the Journal of Neurosurgery in Hanover, where latterly she was Managing Editor. She was a free-lance editor for several years, working for Tuck School and the Vermont Law School. As a volunteer, she was co-founder and co-editor of the Norwich Happenings, published quarterly from 1996 to 2002. For 30 years she published the Newsletter for St. Barnabas Church, where she also served on the vestry.
Jean was a member of the Norwich Planning Commission from 1973-1980, and charter member of the Norwich Conservation Commission in 1974, the first in the State of Vermont. For many years she helped with the annual Norwich Town reports. She served on the board of the Hanover Coop Food Store as director of the education committee and was a trustee of the Norwich Public Library, where she volunteered for many years. Her love of horses led to her membership in the Root District Riding Club, known today as the Root Schoolhouse, and later to volunteer in the High Horses Therapeutic Riding Program, now known as High Horses Center for Equine Assisted Service.
Sadly, Jean's husband, John died in October, 2021, at the age of 92 after 62 years of happy married life. Jean and John were married in 1959 and came to rest in Norwich in 1963. Together, they loved Norwich, gardening, cooking, skiing, canoeing and travel. They were devoted to their family, their son Stephen and his wife Kathryn and their grandchildren, Spencer and Julia, and took great pride in their accomplishments.
A celebration of Jean's life will be held at St. Barnabas Church in Norwich, VT on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Jean's memory to either St. Barnabas Church or to High Horses Center for Equine Assisted Services.
