Obituary

Jean Anderegg Meckof Hanover, New Hampshire and Prouts Neck, Maine died peacefully in her New Hampshire home on December 12, 2015. She was 103. Jean was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 27, 1912 to Edith Williams and Gustavus Anderegg, a scientist with AT&T Bell Laboratories. She was married to John F. Meck, Dartmouth College Vice President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees' Investment Committee, who died in 1978.

She is remembered with love and awe by her three children and their spouses: Sally Meck Pinkham (John), John F. Meck III (Janet) and Julie Meck Peet (Charles), and five grandchildren: Bart Pinkham, Sarah F. Svaerd, Elizabeth Meck Knight, Alexander Hamlin and Benjamin Hamlin. She is survived by five great-grandchildren. The family thanks her devoted caretakers, particularly Wayne LaHaye for his care and support.

Jean grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, and spent a number of years at a Swiss boarding school while her family was living abroad. She was a cum laude graduate of Bryn Mawr College, majoring in French, spent her junior year in Paris and received a Masters degree from Radcliffe College. She taught French at Garrison Forest School, and later taught in various programs under Dartmouth professor, John Rassias. People in the Hanover area still remember taking Jean's French classes at the Marion Cross Elementary School in Norwich, Vermont, where she often walked the four mile round trip from her home.

Known for her independent spirit, vitality, boundless energy, athleticism, New England thrift, and intelligence, with particular brilliance in languages, Jean was admired by young and old. She was an accomplished hostess and with her husband made a formidable team. Many Dartmouth visitors, friends and neighbors, as well as friends of her children found lively conversation, a meal and/or a bed in their Hanover home.

During summers in Prouts Neck, Jean had a regular golf game, teeing off every morning at 8 AM and walking all 18 holes well into her 80's. Even in her 90's Jean's favorite mode of transportation was her red bicycle. In her 100's she would sit at the beach where all ages would stop to chat.

Following her husband's sudden death, Jean, never one to resist a challenge, spent a number of winters in Europe first in Germany perfecting her German at the Goethe Institute and later in Siena studying Italian for eight years where she was featured in the local newspaper after winning first prize for excellence in Italian. In addition, Jean spent several springs sailing with her cousin in the Mediterranean, and traveled extensively with her daughter Sally to Asia, India, Australia, Africa and South America.

Jean set the bar high for her family, friends and caretakers and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service celebrating Jean's life will be held in Prouts Neck, Maine in late June.

Donations may be made in her honor to Howe Library, Hanover, New Hampshire or Charles E. Thomas Library in Prouts Neck, Scarborough, Maine.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
