Jeannine Holland Locherage 84, died at Wheelock Terrace in Hanover, NH on Monday, October 1, 2012.
She was born May 30, 1929 in Houston, Texas to the late Jennings Clay and Myrtle Grace Holland. She attended Houston's San Jacinto High School and in 1951 earned her B.A. in Speech Pathology from Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas, where she was a member of Zeta Phi Eta.
In 1950, she was Aggie Sweetheart at Texas A. and M., and during her senior year at TSCW, she was selected to represent the National Cotton Council of America as their Maid of Cotton. As Maid of Cotton, she traveled the world, serving as the goodwill and fashion ambassador for the American Cotton Industry. This experience brought her many opportunities to appear on national radio and television shows, and eventually led her to a successful modeling career. Jeannine was also a Delta stewardess.
She was a gifted fashion designer, seamstress, homemaker, hostess and artist, passing these passions on to her daughters. She had a tremendous appreciation of music, literature, theater, and art, serving as a docent at the Bayly Art Museum in Charlottesville.
In 1955, Jeannine married Charles Preston Locher, of Houston, Texas. In 1959 they moved their family to Anchorage, Alaska where her husband had previously relocated his construction and pipeline business. After living in Anchorage for 11 years, Jeannine and Preston transitioned their family to Germany for a year, then back to Houston, eventually settling in Charlottesville, VA in 1971.
Jeannine is survived by her four daughters, Melissa Locher Haas and husband John, of Hanover, NH, and their children, Liz and Catherine; Laurie Locher Heatley and husband, Mike, of Richmond, VA, and their children, Melanie, Charlotte, Eliza, and Will; Jeannine Locher Hester and husband, Bart, of Atlanta, and their children Jennings, Ashley, and Preston; and Charlotte Locher and fiancée, Jim, of Atlanta, and his daughter, Lauren. She is further survived by dear family friend, Charles Wilkins Rivers, of Charlottesville. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased in death by her husband, and her brother, Jennings Clay Holland, Jr.
Jeannine was a woman of genuine faith and love for people, and she will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
A memorial service for will be held at 12:00PM, Monday, October 8th at Meadows Presbyterian Church, immediately followed by a reception in the Jefferson Room at Farmington Country Club. Private burial at Monticello Memory Gardens prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ash Lawn Opera Company.
