Joanne Booth Smithdied peacefully on Saturday, September 12, 2015 at her home in Hanover with her daughters at her side.

She was born on June 19, 1918 in Seattle, Washington, the daughter of Henry and Georgy Landsborough Booth. Her great, grandfather General William Booth, founded the Salvation Army in 1865 to aid the poor in the slums of London, England.

Joey had wonderful memories of her childhood in the Pacific Northwest. At the age of twelve she moved with her family to Bronxville, New York. Her father's career was focused in the textile business.

Upon completion of high school, Joey studied fashion design at Parsons School of Design in New York. She always loved beautifully designed clothes and fine fabrics.

She married Donald Hunt Smith on March 22, 1941. He was stationed in Orange, Texas working in the naval shipyards during World War II. She moved many times in her married life and adored her years in California. She made lifelong friends there and enjoyed volunteering at her church, the local hospital and the LA Philharmonic.

The Smith's spent five years in the Bahamas in the 60's. Later, when retirement was on the horizon, they moved back to the Northeast and eventually settled in Hanover where they resided happily for many years.

Her husband died in 2003 and she is also predeceased by her sisters, Catherine Karlen, Elizabeth Hodde and her brother Robert Henry Booth. She shared a deep abiding love for her youngest sister, Nancy Goodwin. She has two daughters, Sandy Wharton Peppet and her husband Russell of Norwalk, CT and Linda Nicks and her husband Dennis of Wilmington, NC. She leaves four grandchildren, Neesha Allen, Brant Nicks, Heather Stramandinoli and Todd Wharton and six great grandchildren, Hunt, Bryce, Carson, Colby, Olivia and William.

She cherished family and faithful friends, her church and the gift of Tea and Tots, her home and beautiful flowers. Joey was a gifted water color artist. Her family wishes to thank her devoted caregivers and faithful bookkeeper.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, September 26th at 11 AM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover. Internment will be private at a later date at the Whitney Cemetery, Brooklyn, CT.
