John Peter
Gormley
February 10, 2016
John Peter Gormley died of cancer at home Wednesday evening, February 10, 2016, surrounded by family, friends, and the snow covered woods and fields of Norwich, Vermont.
John was born in Dover, Massachusetts on April 11, 1956, the son of Joan Hurley and John William Gormley. He attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Following school he lived in New York City working in theatre and television production.
He then moved back to the Boston area and met his wife, Sara Myers. They lived in Back Bay for several years before moving to Vermont to get married and raise a family.
A skilled craftsman from a young age, John worked as a carpenter in Vermont until changing careers to become a video editor, writer, and producer at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
He never stopped building in his free time, however, and went on to construct his family's home, barn, and a sugar house, created with hand-hewn logs, that provided maple syrup to friends and family. Whether it was gardening and taking care of animals in Vermont, or caring for his family's home in Wellfleet, he was happiest working on the land.
A man capable, determined, and energetic his entire life, John enjoyed mastering trades and creating anything he set his mind to. He enriched our lives with a sharp-witted humor, a disarming singing voice, and a lifetime of stories. John will be deeply missed.
He is predeceased by his parents, Joan and John, and his younger brother, Edwin. He is survived by his wife, Sara, his children, Colin and Anne, his brother, Chris, and his sisters, Margaret, Kitty, and Elizabeth.
A service in his memory will be held at St. Denis Catholic Church in Hanover, on Saturday, February 20th at 11 am.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
