John Greenslade
(Jack) Skewes
March 27, 2023
John Greenslade (Jack) Skewes, director of business affairs emeritus at Dartmouth College who was active in civic and community affairs in Hanover for many years, died on March 27, 2023 at The Woodlands where he had lived since 2010. He was 93.
The son of Percy and Eva (Dansereau) Skewes, Jack was born May 8, 1929 in Claremont, N.H. He grew up in Claremont and moved to Concord, Mass., in 1946.
He graduated from Dartmouth in 1951. Following service as an officer in the U.S. Army from 1951-53 that included service in Korea, Jack married Constance C. (Connie) Boyd of Concord, Mass., in December 1953 and returned to Hanover to receive his MBA from Tuck School at Dartmouth in 1956.
Jack and Connie were devoted to each other as they raised their family and remained best of friends through 68 years until Connie's death in 2021.
More than anything, Jack loved being with and meeting people, following the lives of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, following Dartmouth sports, and enjoying the outdoors.
Jack's business career began in 1956 with Stanley Tools in New Britain, Conn., but he and Connie wanted to return to northern New England. In 1960, they settled in Hanover when he joined the expanding staff of Dartmouth's business office.
In the early 1970s he became director of business affairs. For more than three decades he served under four presidents of the College, running a department that had oversight for buildings and grounds, dining services, student housing, purchasing, human resources, the Hanover Inn, and smaller departments that included risk management and casualty and liability insurance.
Jack was named Hanover's Citizen of the Year in 1993, recognizing his service to the community as well as the College. Over the years he was a president of the Hanover Improvement Society, elected to the Hanover and Dresden school boards, and the Hanover board of selectmen. For many years he chaired the Hanover Inn board of overseers.
He was among the founders of the Hanover Youth Hockey Association, a director of the Hanover Water Works Company, and a long-time member of the Hanover Rotary Club.
Jack and Connie are survived by their four children: John (Joan) Skewes of Kensington, N.H., Linda (Doug) Kennedy of Thetford, Vt., Nancy (Matthew) Liddle of Sylva, N.C., and David (Susan) Skewes of Canaan, N.H. Also, five grandchildren—Lindsay Kennedy, Elena Kennedy, Eva Skewes, Hannah Kreider and Jack Liddle—and three great-grandchildren—Elena's sons Oliver Michalchuk and Finn Michalchuk, and Hannah's daughter Sophie Kreider.
The Skewes family wishes to thank the staff of Cornerstone Care of New England for their thoughtful attention to Jack's needs during his period of declining health.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Pine Knoll Cemetery, Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dartmouth Cancer Center or LISTEN.
Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover is in charge of arrangements.
