John Keith Wetzel-- beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend -- passed away peacefully at home in Fairlee, Vermont, on April 25th, 2021.
John was born Feb 1, 1933 at St. Agnes Hospital, White Plains, NY and spent his early years in White Plains. He was a graduate of the 1951 class of the McDonogh School near Baltimore and was captain of the marching band, drummer in school orchestra, and member of the varsity football and lacrosse teams. John attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, Class of 1955. He was a member of the varsity lacrosse team, President of Zeta Psi Fraternity and a member of Casque & Gauntlet. John also participated in the Air Force ROTC. In his senior year at Dartmouth, John entered the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and earned an MBA degree in 1956.
John married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betty) Louise Griffin, of White Plains, NY on December 26, 1954. He entered the USAF in June 1956 as 2nd Lieutenant and was stationed around the country over the next three years.
John's business career began in 1959, at the The Fyr-Fyter Company. In 1964, he moved to The Irving Trust Company in New York, and in 1971, John joined Goldsmith Brothers, a large New York stationary company. John returned to banking in 1973, moving to the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York, where he worked in private banking until his retirement in January 1995.
In May 1997, John and Betty moved to Fairlee, Vermont, where John served as a Lister for many years. John was a "doer" and took up woodworking, making wooden furniture and puzzles for his children and their families. He loved splitting and stacking wood and driving throughout Vermont, as well as taking a dip in Lake Morey at the Town beach. He was also a life-long gardener.
John was particularly dedicated to - and is succeeded by - his wife, Betty; their five children Daniel, Jim, Sue, Debbie and Tom, their spouses, his sixteen grandchildren and their children. He leaves behind a large network of friends built and nurtured over many decades. He will be greatly missed.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at the Parish of St. Denis Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2021. Burial to follow at Pine Knolls Cemetery Hanover. Covid restrictions will be observed. Live stream can be followed at: https://www.saintdenisparish.org
