Obituary

Hanover, NH - Josh Murphy, 32, died in his sleep from a seizure on the evening of October 13, at his home in Shoreline, Washington.

Josh grew up in Hanover, New Hampshire, where he learned to love hiking, biking, and running-activities that he said made him feel free. He graduated from Hanover High School in 2012 as an honor roll student and varsity athlete for three years in track and cross-country. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Washington at Bothell, while living with his uncles, Tim and Kelly Murphy-Stevens, in Seattle. As his senior-year capstone project, sponsored by Analog Devices, Josh led a team of engineering students in training an Integrated Photometric Sensor to recognize characters drawn using hand gestures in the air.

Josh was devoted to his job as a quality control inspector at Amazon's satellite manufacturing plant-Amazon Leo-in Everett, Washington. His ham radio call sign is KK7VRR.

Josh was a competitive cross-country runner in high school, an experience which he often recollected warmly. He was co-founder and group leader of Fitness Crew Club at UW Bothell. Tim and Kelly introduced Josh to their community of runners, and the joy of 5K and 10K "fun runs." One of his biggest accomplishments was finishing the Spartan Race! (20 obstacles plus 5K!) He had plans to compete again in 10ks to reclaim his prime state.

Josh was a boy and a man of few words and strong feelings. He loved animals, especially his dog, Bosco, and the mares he rode at High Horses. He had a lifelong fascination with paleontology and pre-historic mammals and reptiles. Josh loved food and cooking, and had an adventurous spirit in trying new cuisines. He loved his many friends with abiding loyalty; and his friends loved him back for his kindness, optimism, and unique sense of humor. He was caring and attentive to his family and fond of his home town, Hanover. He kept everything he ever owned because of the memories they sparked.

Josh volunteered with Etna Public Library, Sound Salmon Solutions, and Earth Corps.

He is deeply missed by his wife, Liya Liu, his parents, Kirsten Morgan Murphy and James Bernard Murphy, his sisters, Lynn and Nora Murphy, his sister-in-law, Thalia Kowalzik, his uncles Tim and Kelly Murphy-Stevens, his aunt Katie Massie, his grandmothers, Alice Patricia (Paddy) Murphy and Jane Brown Murphy, his stepmother, Kirsten Giebutowski, and numerous cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Josh's memory to https://www.highhorses.org or https://www.seattlehumane.org/

A funeral service will take place at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 23. All are welcome.
