June Adele Russell(née Thayer), age 86, died on January 8, 2014. June grew up and went to school in New Jersey. After working in New York City for several years, she moved to Boston where she worked for the Missions Council of the Congregational Christian Churches (now the United Church of Christ), and attended Boston University. While living there she met her husband, Robert, who was studying at Harvard. They were married in 1957 and moved to Hanover where Bob taught at Dartmouth for 46 years.
June was a member of The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College in Hanover for 56 years during which she served in many capacities, including a term as president of the congregation, as chair of the committee to resettle three young Laotian refugees who still live in the Upper Valley, and as a long-time member of the choir. She also held several volunteer positions in the United Church of Christ at regional, state, and national levels. She was a Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital Auxiliary volunteer for 53 years, and served as president of the Auxiliary from 1979-81. She was a member of the DHMC Assembly of Overseers.
Especially meaningful to June and Bob was their long-time membership in Amnesty International's "Freedom Writers Network," for which they wrote three letters a month on behalf of prisoners of conscience in various parts of the world.
June and Bob formed friendships with many students and welcomed them to their home. They spent several academic terms in Spain with Dartmouth students who were studying Spanish language and literature.
June is survived by her husband Bob Russell.
A memorial service will be held at The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College on Monday, January 20, 2014, at 3:00 PM, followed by a reception at the church. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may send it to The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, 40 College Street, Hanover, NH 03755, designated for the "Bicentennial Fund."
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
