Lucile Duff Baileydied on October 23, 2017, near her home in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Lucy was born on June 6, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of T. Allen Duff and Lillian Ryan Duff. She graduated in 1948 from the University of Illinois, Champagne–Urbana, with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Political Science.

She married George Beuttel Bailey in 1948 and lived in Sharon, Massachusetts, from 1948 to 2013. She was passionate about the environment, and alerted by Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring, Lucy recognized the dangers of pesticides such as DDT and engaged her town and county to change their mosquito-control programs.

Lucy taught elementary school in Sharon twenty-three years. She was active with the Sharon Community Players, the Unitarian Church of Sharon and Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary, and hosted many large and memorable gatherings for family and the community.

Lucy and George were avid cyclists and made extended trips in the U.S., Italy, and France. They were among the first American travelers to China when the country opened to visitors.

Having retired and moved to Kendal in Hanover in 2013, Lucy took part in a Shakespeare reading group, a religious study group, and Osher courses, and volunteered for the Kendal Times. She had a lifelong love of music, theater, and literature and especially enjoyed living close to the Hopkins Center.

She was pre-deceased by her husband George B. Bailey, who died in 2009, and by her sister Janet MacDuff. Survivors include sisters Lillian Durden (Gibson Durden) and Helen Molinari (John Molinari); her brothers-in-law Bruce and Donald Bailey and sister-in-law Martha Bailey; her children Janet Hollocher (Kurt Hollocher) of Schenectady, New York; George Duff Bailey (Iris Weissman) of Chappaqua, New York; Sarah Brady (Martin Brady) of Attleboro, Massachusetts; Rebecca Bailey (Jim Schley) of South Strafford, Vermont; Leonie Howard (Brad Howard) of Charlton, Massachusetts; and Thomas G. Bailey of Watertown, Massachusetts; along with ten grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her verbal acuity and sense of humor.
