Marcia Auerbach
Khatri
January 5, 2011
Marcia Auerbach Khatri82, died in Hanover on January 5, 2011 - three days after her birthday. Born in 1929, she spent her childhood years in Beverley Hills, California where her father, George Auerbach, was a movie script writer and her mother, Helen Coburn (Auerbach), an actress.
In the late 1930s, to quote Marcia, "Life changed abruptly when my parents decided that the world was shaking and they should jump ship and land on a farm in Vermont." The five year venture was not successful, but the years in Vermont, said Marcia, "endowed me with a life-long love affair with Vermont." Though the family returned to California, they did not immediately sell the farm and Marcia and her sister, Helen, often returned to Chester, Vermont for vacations.
After the University of Chicago and a year at Katherine Gibbs, Marcia worked in New York City as an assistant to Kermit Bloomgarden, the theatrical producer of Arthur Miller's and Lillian Hellman's plays. Later, some medically related studies at Columbia University developed Marcia's medical vocabulary and led her to an editing position with a medical and text book publisher, Appleton Century Croft.
In 1971 Marcia married Dr. Tekchand ("Tek") Khatri and they had 24 happy years together, often visiting Tek's family in India. Marcia helped Tek in his medical practice, serving as his office manager. They lived in Jamaica Estates in Queens.
Tek died in 1995. Soon thereafter Marcia moved to Portsmouth, NH to be near her sister, Helen and her family. Three years later Marcia moved to Vermont. During the next two years, as she waited for an apartment at Kendal, Marcia began a long volunteer commitment to The Haven, in White River Junction, a commitment she continued until very recently. Marcia came to Kendal in 2004 where she quickly made new friends and became involved in many activities.
Marcia is survived by her sister, Helen A. Winebaum, Helen's husband, Sumner Winebaum, two nephews, Samuel and Jacob and their wives Dominique and Cindy, and several grand nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service at Kendal in early February. Donations in Marcia's name may be made to the Cadbury Fund, at Kendal, the Upper Valley Haven, 713 Hartford Ave., White River Junction, VT 05001, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.
