Obituary

Muriel Driard Kingwas born in Saigon, Vietnam, then a French colony, on October 2, 1928, to Marguerite Germaine and Robert Driard. She died of natural causes on April 8, 2021, at Kendal in Hanover, NH.

Muriel attended the University of Aix-Marseille, receiving a degree in literature. She received a Fulbright grant to study at Stanford University, where she met Jerome B King, whose heart she captured on sight. Muriel returned to Aix to complete her MA in English and American literature at Aix. Jerry then pursued studies in Paris, while wooing her entire family. The couple were married in Hanover, NH, in 1953.

Muriel delighted in her role as wife and mother and grandmother. She had a gift for friendship and conversation, a great love of gardens, scenery, reading, music, and letter-writing. She delighted in trips back to France, to introduce her children to family and friends. She and Jerry were devoted members of Grace Episcopal Church in Amherst MA.

From age 34, Muriel suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, which she bore with grace and stoicism. In later years, as she lost her eyesight to macular degeneration, she adapted to take pleasure in the few activities still open to her, listening to music or recorded books, or books read to her by family or friends. Until her last years, when her health and memory failed her, she maintained her interest in and concern for others.

She was predeceased by Jerry, her husband of nearly 60 years, and by her brother, Theo. She is survived by her children, Nathalia King (Christopher Zinn), Christianne King (R Sean Craig), Daniel King, David King (Katie Pelletier) and seven grandchildren: Francis, Peter and Helena Craig; Gabriel and Sebastian Zinn; Adrian and Esme King.
