Obituary

Nina Streepey Zanes ("Susie"), daughter of Nina Fitzpatrick Streepey and George William Streepey, and wife of Roger H. Zanes, Jr., was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on September 16, 1929 and passed away peacefully in Hanover, New Hampshire on November 26, 2022.

Susie spent her formative years in the Clayton, Missouri school system and was a 1951 graduate of Depauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, where she pledged and was a proud lifelong Theta. Susie and Roger were married on November 8, 1952, while he was serving in the USAF. His first posting was to San Antonio for basic training and then Syracuse University for a year of intensive instruction in Russian. After that, Roger was assigned to the USAF signals intelligence base in Chicksands, United Kingdom, where he served as a codebreaker of encrypted Russian messages. A diary Susie kept during their 18 months in England documents dozens of wonderful adventures exploring the country and falling in love with it, leading Susie to become a lifelong Anglophile who returned to the country often once Roger retired.

After his honorable discharge from the USAF, Roger completed his studies at Yale (Class of 1958) and joined the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). With ALCOA, Susie and Roger enjoyed assignments to, and living in, Los Angeles, CA; Lausanne, Switzerland; San Salvador, El Salvador; Coral Gables, FL; and Pittsburgh, PA. Upon Roger's retirement in 1988, Susie and Roger moved to a home they had built at Highland Ridge in New London, NH. This home was their launchpad for the next 20 years for dozens of trips to, primarily, Europe and all over the United States and Canada. Roger died of lung cancer in 2008, after which Susie moved to a condo on South Main Street in Hanover, NH, where she lived until 2021. Susie continued to travel internationally for a few years and then settled down to a life of enjoying all that Hanover and the Valley have to offer. She especially enjoyed near daily walks around Occum Pond, frequent walks in and around Woodstock, VT, and watching Dartmouth's men's crew team practicing and in competition.

Susie was predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her sister, Sandra Streepey Burgheim. Left to enjoy their memories of her are her son and first-born, Roger H. Zanes III (wife Pamela), of Round Hill, VA, and her daughter (born 11 months later), Susan Zanes McLaughlin ("Missy") (husband Michael "Mike" McLaughlin), of Palmetto Bluff, SC. Three of her five grandchildren were Pam and Roger's children: Kevin H. Zanes, of Gais, Switzerland; Megan Zanes Groome, of Purcellville, VA, and Regan H. Zanes, of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and two were Missy and Mike's sons: Andrew J. McLaughlin ("Andy"), of Wilton, CT, and Thomas H. McLaughlin ("Tom"), of Steamboat Springs, CO. Susie's great-grandchildren were Leo, Bodi, Nico, and Zoe Zanes (the four who belong to Kevin and his Swiss wife, Nara); Kira and Dillon Groome (the two who belong to Megan and her husband, Michael "Mike" Groome); and Madeline "Maddie" McLaughlin (who belongs to Andy and his wife, Taylor). Regan is still single and enjoying life in Brazil, and Tom is engaged to Stephanie Alsberg and getting married in September 2023.

At Susie's request, there will be no services. Susie will be cremated, and her ashes buried with her parents and sister in Little Rock, AR. Donations in Susie's name may be made to the Nature Conservancy and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
