Obituary

Norman St. John Fridlundof Hanover, New Hampshire, age 86, passed away early Saturday morning, June 26, 2021. He was born December 20, 1934 in Englewood, New Jersey, the son of Hilmer Maurice and Edith L. (St. John) Fridlund. Norman, also known as Norm, "Tex", or "Dukes" to his many friends and family, was a kind, sweet gentleman, who loved people in general and his family in particular.

He was a devoted husband and father. His openness, curiosity, and sense of adventure, paired with his keen sense of humor "€" at times zany and irreverent "€" especially endeared him to his children and grandchildren. He could talk to anyone from anywhere and make an easy connection.

He graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH in 1956. After Dartmouth, he attended Naval Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport RI and received his commission as Lieutenant (junior grade) in 1957. He subsequently completed specialized training for deep-sea diving and for submarine rescue. On June 28, 1960, while stationed at the New London submarine base, he married his hometown sweetheart, Priscilla Katherine Sager.

After the Navy, Norm joined Johnson & Higgins in New York City as an insurance broker. In 1969, he transferred to the New Orleans office where he remained until 1975. He moved to Simsbury, CT and later to Boxford, MA for his work. In the late 1980s, he returned to Hanover and purchased AB Gile.

In his spare time, Norm was a "gear head". If something had a motor he liked it, whether a hydroplane boat, an old classic car, or an airplane. Norm's passions included flying, especially twin-engine planes and sailplanes. A high point in his air adventures was piloting the P-51 Mustang "Crazy Horse". He also loved old and classic cars, whether transforming the car he had in high school into a hot rod with a big-block engine or cruising in his Excalibur.

He will be remembered by all who knew him for his good nature, wonderful sense of humor, his love of people, and joie de vivre.

Norm is predeceased by his wife Priscilla to whom he was happily married for 47 years and his elder son, Erik.

Norm is survived by three of his four children and their spouses: Alexis Fridlund-Vins, her husband Peter Vins of Siena, Italy, Christopher Fridlund, his wife Jean Chung of Highland, MD, and Amy Fridlund of Sydney, Australia, his daughter-in-law Suzanne (Brown) Fridlund, wife of his late son Erik of Hanover, NH and Shaker Heights, OH, his five grandchildren: William and Katherine Fridlund, Sophia Vins, Henry Jae and Priscilla Iris Fridlund, his two sisters Elaine Lester of Marlborough, MA and Alice "Lou" Hance of Lebanon, NH, and his sister-in-law Billie Reissner and her husband George of Rivervale, NJ.

The time and place of a memorial service will be announced at a future date.
