Paul Williams
Glover, Jr.
January 29, 2016
Paul Williams Glover, Jr.92, of Hanover, died peacefully at his home on Friday, January 29, 2016. He was surrounded by his sons and daughter, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born to the late Paul Williams Glover, Sr., and Katherine Blandin Glover on July 25, 1923 in Bath, New Hampshire. He spent his early childhood in Bath, attended Holderness and Clark Schools and graduated from Dartmouth College, class of 1945. Paul was a member of Psi Upsilon, Dragon senior society and was a member of the Dartmouth Ski Team. He joined the United States Marine Corps as part of the V12 program at Dartmouth, served in WW II, and was stationed in Japan during the Occupation.
In 1946, Paul married Eleanor Diane Rose, and together they moved to Bath to raise their four children in the village where his ancestors settled in 1761. Continuing to spend summers in Bath, the family moved to Hanover, NH.
Paul felt a great loyalty to Dartmouth, perhaps because he was a part of a long legacy of Dartmouth graduates beginning in 1777 with David Goodall. He was an active supporter of the College, his Class, and attended countless football games from his perch high atop the East Stands. Also, Paul's loyalty and love for the Marine Corps was a constant throughout his life, retiring after 25 plus years with the rank of full Colonel.
Later in life, Paul married Janet Eaton. They traveled together extensively, often including their children and grandchildren on their many adventures. Hawaii became a particularly special place for Paul, and he returned as often as he was able, always accompanied by family and friends. A generous host, Paul often entertained his classmates, his Marine Corps friends, and many others at his home on Occum Pond. Paul's love for animals was unparalleled, and he was especially fond of dogs and could be often seen driving around Hanover with a Great Dane sticking out of his sunroof.
Paul was a devoted father to his four children and instilled in them the values of loyalty, kindness, and generosity. He was a beloved granddad to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who adored spending time with him and hearing his many stories. Paul and his older (a fact he never let her forget) sister, Mary Lou remained close over his long life.
Paul is survived by his sister, Mary Louise Girardi, his children: Paul & Marilyn Glover of West Hartford, CT, Gwendolyn Glover Thompson of Norwich, VT, Kendra Glover of Franconia, NH and Andrew & Lucie Glover of Austin,TX; twelve grandchildren: John Glover, Jr., Cecelia Glover, Paul Glover IV, Abigail Glover, Chloe Glover, Christian Glover, Nicholas Glover, Todd Thompson, Nelle Devitt, and Hope Waldron; and eleven great-grandchildren. As well as his step-children; Margaret Gardiner, Lisa Gardiner, Rene & Susan Trespalacios and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gardiner.
A service will be held 11am Saturday, February 6, 2016, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Hanover, NH. A burial service will be held at a later date in Bath, NH.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation (mcsf.org) to "honor Marines by educating their children."
Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
