Obituary

Robert Leonard Allen (Bob)88, passed away on September 15, 2011 after a long illness, at the Kendal retirement community in Hanover, New Hampshire. A kind and considerate individual, Bob was born in Springfield, Massachusetts and grew up in Hartford and Wethersfield, Connecticut.

He was a member of the class of 1945 at Dartmouth College. In 1942 he left Dartmouth to enter the U. S. Army, serving as a medic with the 10th Mountain Division in Colorado and Italy. Bob was wounded in Italy and returned to Dartmouth in 1945 where he completed his undergraduate studies.

Following graduation, Bob worked in the Secretary's Office at Dartmouth and became Assistant Secretary of the College. In 1958, Bob, his wife Carol and three children moved from Hanover to Lincoln, Massachusetts. At that time Bob joined the Kendall Company in Boston as Director of Public Relations. From 1974 to 1987 he was Executive Director of the Henry P. Kendall Foundation. His thirteen years with the Kendall Foundation represent one of the most rewarding periods of his professional life. In Bob's words, the Foundation, "was enabled to fight for the status quo, when the natural world was threatened, and to work for change when the balance had been tipped." During his tenure, support was given to many worthy causes including: energy conservation, land use, wilderness protection and arms control. Bob had a deep and abiding personal commitment to land planning and environmental issues. He was a member and chairman of the Lincoln Planning Board for many years, and served on the boards of directors for a number of national environmental organizations.

Bob and his wife retired to Castine, Maine in 1990. They moved to the Kendal Community in 2005. All who met him appreciated Bob's delightful sense of humor. With a smile that could warm the world and a love of music, his eyes would sparkle as he sang; "I've got the world on a string..." and "Fly me to the moon..."

He is survived by Carol, his wife of 67 years, two daughters, Susan Allen and her husband, Neil Middleton of Lincoln, Massachusetts, Martha Allen, and her husband, Scott McKibben, of Canaan, Vermont, and his son Mark of Belmont, Massachusetts. Five grandsons, Tyler and Nicholas Middleton, Cody and Wyatt McKibben and Sam Allen, also survive him.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Gifts in Bob's memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

Plumb-tree beside my door,
Forget not thou the Spring,
Faithfully blossoming."
