Robert H. "Bob" Grosspassed away suddenly on Sunday, March 2, 2014 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center while recovering from a recent surgery. He was born on March 6, 1945 in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Stan and Annette Gross. He was the eldest of two sons. His brother, Richard, currently resides in San Mateo, CA, with his wife, Lynn.
Bob has been a member of the Faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth College since 1977. He was the original Director for the Center for Biological and Biomedical Computing at Dartmouth. Prof. Gross loved teaching, as well as learning. He found his research to be fascinating and enjoyed the challenges it presented. Bob also served on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Dysautonomia Foundation. In 1984, he co-founded Textco BioSoftware, which develops software tools for biologists. In 1998 the Biotechnology Software and Internet Journal selected Bob as the recipient of their first 'Career Achievement Award' for scientific software design.
Bob had many outside interests as well. He was an avid outdoor photographer and a big fan of the Dartmouth Men's Hockey Program. He served as a Faculty Advisor to the team for many years, and was a member of the 'Friends of Men's Hockey' Board. Bob also loved music, and enjoyed following the Bruins and the Red Sox.
Bob's family will miss him a great deal. They were a close family that loved and supported each other through thick and thin. He and his wife, Roberta, known as 'Bobbi' to many of her friends, were married in 1968. They have three wonderful children – Jason, Kevin, and Lisa.
A Celebration to remember Bob's life will take place on Monday, March 10, 2014, at 12:30 pm in Rollins Chapel on the Dartmouth Campus. In Bob's memory, donations can be made to the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation: http://www.familialdysautonomia.org/donate .
