Robert (Bob)
E. Sanborn
January 6, 2023
Robert (Bob) E. Sanborn, 79, died January 6, 2023 at the Jack Byrne Center in Lebanon, NH.
Bob was the son of Harry and Dora (Balch) Sanborn and was born March 14, 1943 in Hanover, NH during a blackout order for World War II. Bob attended grade school in Lyme Center, in a two-room schoolhouse and had the same teacher for all eight years, who he thought the world of (Mrs. Charlotte Perkins). He graduated from Orford High School in 1961. During his high school years he was very proud that he played soccer, basketball and baseball for all four years – he loved sports.
Bob worked for Dartmouth College for over 43 years as the Assistant Greenskeeper in the summer. In the winter he worked at the old rope tow on the back side of the golf course and cared for the ice on Occum Pond, the Storrs Hill ski area and finally for 19 years at the Dartmouth Skiway until his retirement in July of 2022.
Bob married Hazel A. Hutchins on October 29, 1966 and lived the rest of his life in the home he built for them in Lyme Center. They raised two daughters and he enjoyed his time with their only grandchild, David.
Bob joined the U.S. Army Reserves (Company C, 368th Engineer Construction Battalion) on April 13, 1964 and was honorably discharged on February 23, 1970 after serving 6 years.
Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyme and served as a Deacon for many years as well as a Trustee and Auditor. He was a Deputy Forest Fire Warden for many years and was a member of a group sent from New Hampshire to fight a forest fire in Minnesota. Bob also played in two men's softball leagues until the age of 55 and was a member of American Legion Post 80 in Lyme for 56 years (serving as Commander for multiple years).
Bob enjoyed traveling and he and Hazel saw most of the 50 states together, including a trip to Alaska for their 40th anniversary. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and most importantly his grandson, David. He shot a 4x4 elk in Idaho with his good friend, Jay Hill the year he retired. It was a hunting trip he had dreamed of for years and he made lots of great memories.
Bob is survived by his wife of 56 years , Hazel; two daughters, Michelle Bean (Kerry Peters) of Lyme and Marcy Sanborn of Lyme Center; his grandson, David Bean of Lyme; his sister, Roberta (Joe) Rotz of Sudbury, MA and their extended family as well as many nieces and nephews.
At Bob's request there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Highland Cemetery in Lyme, NH. Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH is in charge of arrangements.
