Robert Stewart Kirk90, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Genesis Rehabilitation Center. He was born on November 2, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Claude L. and Gertrude (Nilsson) Kirk.

Robert received his BSChe from IIT in 1943 and went on to receive his PHD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1948. After graduation he taught engineering for many years, before accepting a position with Standard Oil of California Research.

In 1958 Robert married the love of his life, Lorna Frances (McKenzie) on September 22, 1958 at Grace Church, Millbank, Ontario. In 1966 Robert moved his family to Massachusetts after accepting a position as a Professor of Chemical Engineering at The University of Massachusetts, Amherst. After retiring in 1989, he and Lorna moved to West Lebanon, NH.

In Robert's younger years, he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed canoe explorations, target shooting, hiking and camping. After moving to Massachusetts, Robert became interested in biking and alpine skiing, which he enjoyed into his 80's. Other interests included reading, classical music, watching sports, and a fine single malt.

Robert was an active member in the Episcopal Church, attending Grace Church in Amherst, MA and St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Hanover, NH.

Robert is survived by his wife Lorna, daughter Janet Elizabeth Kirk and husband Richard Chouinard, and son Robert McKenzie Kirk and wife Donna Durant. Robert was predeceased by his brother Douglas Johnson Kirk.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Monday, June 24th at 11:00 AM. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, St. Thomas Episcopal Church or to the charity of your choice.
