Obituary

Robert M. Macdonald91, of 19 Rip Road, Hanover, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 29, 2014 with his wife and children by his side.

Robert was born on July 9, 1923 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of Robert and Sidney (Wilson) Macdonald. In 1942, he joined the Fleet Air Arm of the British Royal Navy, serving actively as a Lieutenant in the West Indies, Atlantic, European and Pacific areas. He was also a Commander of a Naval Signals Unit (Combined Operations) in the Normandy invasion, landing on Sword beach in 1944.

Robert emigrated to the United States in 1948 to pursue his education and professional career. He graduated from Yale University, earning a B.A. with honors and distinction in 1950 and a PhD in Economics in 1955. While at Yale, he also met the love of his life, Mado Ruth Ambach, whom he married in 1953.

Robert became an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of California in Los Angeles, before returning to Yale in 1956 as Assistant Professor of Economics. In 1959, he was named Associate Professor of Business Economics at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He went on to full professorship and continued to teach at Tuck for over 30 years.

Following his retirement in 1989, Robert stayed in the Upper Valley and continued to pursue his principal interests: golf, fine wine, reading, poetry and the financial markets. He was an avid golfer and spent many of his days enjoying the game and his many friends at the Hanover Country Club.

Robert is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mado (Ambach) Macdonald; his daughter Laura Watson and son-in-law Rick of Stamford CT; his son Kevin Macdonald and daughter-in-law Lynda of Dedham MA; and his five grandchildren, Caitrin and Taylor Watson, and Tory, Malcolm and Reilly Macdonald.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Endowed Beds Fund at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Checks may be made out to the "MHMH-Endowed Beds Fund" and sent to DHMC Development Office, c/o Michele Clark, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon NH 03756.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2014 at 4:30pm at the Hanover Inn in Hanover NH.
