Robert "Bob" McLaughrypassed away at age 95 on September 7, 2016 at his home in Hanover, NH surrounded by his loving family.

Bob was born January 13, 1921, in New Wilmington, PA, the son of DeOrmond "Tuss" and Florence (Jackson) McLaughry. He spent most of his childhood in Providence, RI with his older siblings John and Jeanne. There he attended the Moses Brown School, then Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. As a teenager he loved adventure. Driving a 1936 Packard convertible at age 15, he and his friend, Bob Aldrich, raced The Limited, an overnight train, from New York to Chicago on gravel roads. The teenagers arrived first!

Bob graduated from Dartmouth College, class of 1944, where he majored in Political Science. He competed on the football team for his father and coach, Tuss. He was a member of Psi Upsilon, Casque & Gauntlet, and President of the Green Key Society. Both organizations would start him down a path of service to Dartmouth College that would include being the '44 Class President from 1959-69, a Trustee of Casque & Gauntlet, and a dedicated supporter of Dartmouth Football. Bob found his best friends at Dartmouth, and was an ardent Dartmouth supporter for his entire life and loved tailgating.

Bob's college career at Dartmouth was interrupted by war. He became a Marine pilot and his military service was from 1942-68. In World War II, he flew 42 combat missions as a dive-bomber, piloting the Corsair F4U fighter with the "Flying Turtles" squadron in the Southwest Pacific. Bob was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight, in actions against Japanese forces in the Pacific Theater of Operations. In November 1946, Bob was with the Marine Air Reserve Training Command Squadron VMF-235 at the Naval Air Station in Squantum, MA. In September 1950, the squadron was called to active duty. Bob returned to battle in the Korean Conflict again piloting the Corsair and the new F7F Tigercat. In 1952 he was awarded a Gold Star for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight in action against enemy forces in Korea and named Squadron Commander. After three campaigns in the Far East, he eventually earned the rank of Colonel. Bob remained in the Marine Corps Reserve as a Marine Air Group Commander piloting the F9F Panther Jet fighters until 1968. He never gave up his love of flying.

Bob worked in marketing in the oil industry for 8 years before returning to Hanover, NH to establish his real estate business in 1959 and raise his family. He served as President of the Hanover/Lebanon Board of Realtors, as well as Director and President of the NH Association of Realtors and Director of the National Association of Realtors. Bob became very active in planning and community growth in Hanover in the 1960's and 70's. He served for 10 years as a town selectman, 6 years on the planning board, and for 9 years on its Board of Assessors, and also held various other positions of public service. Bob admired the beauty of the Upper Valley daily, and felt very fortunate to have a wonderful career of 45 years in real estate doing what he loved.

Bob was an avid skier. He was a Director of the Ford Sayre Ski Program in the '60's. He skied an average of 35 days a year, and took his last turns at age 91 at the Dartmouth Skiway. He played golf and loved to travel. Bob travelled to six continents. He had two wonderful wives. He had four children and 24 years with his first wife, Joan Jackson. After Joan passed away, Bob was fortunate to marry Ann DeWolfe. The two were inseparable for 40 years until Ann's death in 2013. Bob was a gregarious and hardworking man. He loved his work, family, friends, adventure and the outdoors.

Bob is survived by; Bruce McLaughry and wife Susan of Norwich, Vt., Bill McLaughry of Norwich, Vt, Rob McLaughry and former wife Sue of Norwich, Vt., Lynda Burt and her husband Nathan of Middlebury, Vt.; and nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. His stepchildren include Richard DeWolfe and his wife Marcy of Westwood, Mass., Patricia Griffin Chartrand and her husband Richard of Vero Beach, Fla., Howard L. DeWolfe and his wife Sylvie of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and preceded in death by his step daughter, Paula Bucklin.

We would like to thank Dr. Lisa Furmanski and all the care providers who did so much to enrich Bob's final years.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, September 13th, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home, 11 School St., Hanover, NH. A private family service and burial will be held on Wednesday September 14th.
