Robert P. Withington, Jr. passed away with his family by his side. Bob was born in West Newton, Massachusetts, on September 11, 1937, the son of Robert P. and Elizabeth Eddy Withington. He attended the Fessenden School in West Newton; the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania; and graduated in 1956 from Newton High School. After serving in the Third Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany, from 1958 to 1960, he enrolled at the University of Colorado. After graduating in 1964, he married JoAnne Lewis of Merriam, Kansas, and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he began his graduate work at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. In 1970 he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Economics at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh. In 1976 he received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and continued teaching at Plattsburgh until retiring in January of 2003. While in Plattsburgh, he served on various college committees and city councils prior to retiring.

After 49 years of marriage, he leaves his beloved wife, JoAnne; two sons--Robert III and his wife, Jennifer, of Oneonta, New York, and their children, Robert IV and Wyndam; and William and his wife, Rachel, of Stamford, Connecticut, and their children, Eleanor and Elizabeth. His brother, George E. Withington, also survives him.

Along with photography, travel was one of Bob's great passions and included trips, many with his family, to China, Russia, Cuba, Germany, Alaska, and El Salvador. With JoAnne, he did a number of long distance walks in England and Ireland, and did numerous "blue highway" road trips across America. With his best friend, Joe Kelley, he explored several of America's waterways by canoe.

Bob's 10-year journey with cancer served as an inspiration to others who were ill. He never let cancer define him, always looked to the future with enthusiasm, and encouraged others to live in that manner.

The family will be welcoming friends at 22 Turnpike Rd., Norwich, Vermont, on Sunday, December 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A graveside service for Robert Withington Jr, 76, who died on December 3, 2013, will be held on Saturday, May 24th at 12:00pm in Hillside Cemetery in Norwich, VT.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Bob's name be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, DHMC Development Office, ATTN Michele Clark, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03756.
