Obituary

Roxie Tanzi Roberts94, a native of Hanover, died Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at the Lebanon Center of Genesis ElderCare.

She was born on February 12, 1919, the daughter of Angelo and Della (Woodward) Tanzi. She grew up within the lively environment of her family's Hanover business, Tanzi Brothers Grocery, and attended the Hanover schools. She was a member of her school's Glee Club, Choir, and drama club, The Footlighters, and graduated at the top of her class.

In 1937, she began her freshman year at Becker College in Worcester, Massachusetts. After receiving her degree, she became the Secretary to the Superintendent of the Hanover schools and co-chaired the Young Women's Group in Hanover.

In 1941, Roxie married Dr. Robert S. Nichols, whom she met while he was attending Dartmouth College. During World War II, while he was training as a medical corpsman for the Navy, she worked as a secretary and Gray Lady volunteer for the Red Cross. Dr. Nichols died in 1945 during the War in the Pacific.

On March 28, 1950 she married World War II veteran, Junior (Jack) Roberts, who, in 1957 became owner of Tony's Barber Shop in Hanover.

In her earlier years, Roxie enjoyed skiing, tennis, hiking, and tap dancing. She was a member of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth college where she taught Sunday School and chaired the Devotions Committee. She also worked briefly as a Teacher's Aid in the Hanover schools.

As she grew older, her interests turned to ice skating, walking, playing the piano, and conversation. She worked as secretary at Dartmouth Medical School's Library and then in Dartmouth's Government Department after her children were grown. She was also a member of the Steering Committee for the "Breathe Free" group at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital. Her primary joy, however, was her large extended family, and she happily doted on her grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, Donald Roberts of Amherst, NH; five daughters, Carol Baker of Madeira Beach, Florida, Mardi McGregor of Guanajuato, Mexico, Ann McAllister of Meriden, and Debbie Carr and Mary Tremblay, both of Lebanon; 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 2003.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 27th at 2:00 pm at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College. Burial will follow at Pine Knoll Cemetery in Hanover.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lebanon Center of Genesis ElderCare, Old Etna Road, Lebanon, NH 03766.
