Obituary

Ruth Goldsmithdied Monday, Feburary 8, 2016, at the Wheelock Terrace Assisted Living facility in Hanover, NH. She was born September 9, 1923, to Julia and Edward Danziger.

Ruth grew up in Brooklyn, with Prospect Park serving as her playground. As a child, her summers were spent with her siblings and cousins in the eastern Catskills, a region she loved throughout her life. After graduating from Girls' High School, she modeled while studying painting. At age 19, she married Martin Goldsmith. During World War II, she worked in war-related factories. At age 21, she had her only child, Beth. She was a fiercely devoted mother and mother hen, raising Beth in the beach community of Far Rockaway, Queens, and, briefly, in central Florida.

Ruth became active in community affairs in the Rockaways, serving as a volunteer in the public schools and as a den mother in the Girl Scouts. As Beth grew up, Ruth crafted a career as a jack-of-all-trades in doctors' offices; first in Far Rockaway and then in Manhattan.

She found her true calling as a grandmother and great-grandmother. Ruth was a study in contrasts: a charming misanthrope who loved parties, a connoisseur of fine things who never made them a priority, an avid beach-goer who spent much of her adult life in Pittsburgh and the Bronx, and a self-described New York City sophisticate who happily spent her twilight in rural New Hampshire.

Ruth was ahead of her time in many ways and lived a life with no shortage of bad bounces, yet she lived without regret or bitterness. She was fiercely independent, with a formidable combination of will and resilience.

She was pre-deceased by her brother Jordan Danziger and sister Natalie Binet, her husband Martin Goldsmith, and her daughter Beth Zinman.

Ruth is survived by son-in-law Richard Zinman, daughters-in-law Mary Coffey and Lauren Klein, grandsons Gregory and Jonathan Zinman, and great-grandchildren Ella, Elias, Irena, and Loie Zinman.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of Hanover, NH.
