Sallie Chen Huiy Huang75, of Forest Hills, NY and Linkou, Taiwan, died at age 75 on January 6, 2013. She died peacefully in Hanover, NH surrounded by her two daughters after her brave fight against cancer. Sallie was born May 30, 1937 in Zhoushan, Taiwan the daughter of Dr. Chao Pi Yang and Meei Chi Lee.
After graduating from Tunghai University, she married Dr. Paky Pa-Kai Huang, MD/PhD in 1962 and moved to Japan where she gave birth to her two daughters. In 1975, the family moved to the United States to provide better opportunities for their daughters and settled in New York.
While raising her daughters, she worked at a variety of jobs including medical assistant, computer programmer, and a realtor. She spoke five languages and pursued many creative interests. She enjoyed sewing, playing music (Koto-Japanese harp), arranging flowers (Ikebana), knitting, jewelry making and ballroom dancing.
She was also kind and passionate about human rights. She was active in PPSEAWA, an international women's association affiliated with the U.N., where she held the position of Treasurer. She was a strong proponent of Taiwanese democracy and had authored books on the subject as well as a memoir of her father, a physician and mayor. She pursued all challenges with determination and energy.
Sallie was a member of the Long Island Taiwanese Church in Williston Park, NY. She was a woman of strong faith and believed that she can achieve any goal with hard work and perseverance. She instilled these values in her children and grandchildren.
Sallie is survived by her four brothers and two sisters: Dr. Alwin Young of Minneapolis, MN, Dr. David Yang of Staten Island, NY, Dr. Randolph Young of Long Island, NY, Dr. Gabriel Young of Cupertino, CA, Mei Huey Yao of Taiwan, and Chiou Huey Chou of Taiwan; two daughters and their husbands: Frances and Jack Hinck of Hanover, NH and Lily and Charles Ropes III of Wappingers Falls, NY; and 6 grandchildren: James, Stephanie, Erica and Matthew Hinck and Charlie and Zachary Ropes.
On Saturday, January 12, 2013, there will be a funeral with a calling hour at 2:00 p.m. with the service immediately following at 3:00 p.m. at Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover, NH.
