Sarah Philinda Foss, 99, died January 14, 2023 at Woodstock Terrace in Woodstock, VT. She was born August 5, 1923 at Boston, MA, the daughter of Leon Frederic Foss and Mary Parker Foss. She lived in Concord, MA while attending local schools. She graduated from Concord Academy in 1941 and from Tufts University, Medford, MA in 1945. She also earned a graduate degree from the Idraetshojskole, Sonderborg, Denmark.
From 1945 to 1964 she headed the physical education departments at schools in California, Colorado, Virginia, New York City, and Hartford, CT.
Sarah moved to Plymouth, VT in 1964. She was founding director of the Woodstock Learning Clinic, an educational rehabilitation center for neurologically impaired children in Woodstock, VT, from 1968 to 1974. She then moved to Lyndonville, VT to become the coordinator of special education services for the Essex-Caledonia school district. She retired in 1981.
Soon after the "Velvet Revolution" in the former Czechoslovakia in late 1989, she started a three-year adventure teaching English in the newly formed Czech Republic. She lived and taught at the high school in Zdar nad Sazavou in central Bohemia. After returning to Vermont in 1993, she maintained contact with students, faculty, and friends there until her death.
For eight years Sarah enjoyed transcribing books for the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Sarah was a board member of many organizations, including the Baird School in Burlington, VT, the Woodstock Learning Trust, the Norman Williams Public Library, Woodstock, and the Visiting Nurse Alliance of VT and NH. She also enjoyed belonging to the New Century Club in Woodstock. She had been an active member of the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, for the past 30 years.
She is survived by two nephews, two grand-nieces, and a grand-nephew.
A memorial service will be held at the Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, in late spring. Burial will be private.
