Obituary

Sheila Harvey TanzerSheila Harvey Tanzer, aged 94, died peacefully at home on October 9, 2022. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on March 27, 1928, the daughter of Edmund Burke Shea and Dorothy Thigpen Shea.

Sheila was married to Lawrence Elliot Harvey from 1951-1988. He was Professor of French and Italian Literatures at Dartmouth College and a renowned Samuel Beckett scholar until his death in 1988. She supported his professorial endeavors with great energy and dedication, including spending several years with him and their children in Italy and France, learning the languages and helping to nurture the students in the foreign study programs. An astute editor of his scholarly writings, she cared for him with courage and fortitude after his diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. She married Radford Chapple Tanzer, MD, a distinguished plastic surgeon, in 1995, and they shared eight happy years before his death in 2003.

She was a beloved member of the Upper Valley community for more than six decades. She was a published poet and the author of Mingled Souls (2016), which tells the story of her parents' courtship and marriage through the letters they exchanged during WW1. She was a devoted Hospice and palliative care volunteer for many years, and a gifted gardener, with her garden often featuring on the Hanover Garden Club "Gardens Open" tour.

She is survived by her four children: John Lawrence Harvey, Warwick, Rhode Island; Akeyla Silver, Florida; Elizabeth Dolan Harvey, Toronto, Canada; Edmund Shea Harvey, New York City and Chang Mai, Thailand; and by her sister, Wendy Randall, Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Stuart, Florida. She has six grandchildren: Dorothy Tyler Ranson, Nicholas Elliot Harvey-Cheetham, Lauren Elizabeth Sharpe, Francesca Elliot Harvey, Anthea Emily Harvey-Cheetham, and Bridget Elizabeth Harvey. She was delighted to welcome three great-grandchildren in her final years: John Beckett Ranson, Isabel Harper Ranson, and Elliot Shea Sharpe.

A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Church, Hanover NH on December 3, 2022 at 11 am.
