Sidney S. LetterSidney S. Letter died peacefully on March 17, 2023, in the presence of the kind, capable care staff of the Wheelock Terrace retirement facility in Hanover, where he had resided since December of 2012.
He was born on March 25, 1937 to William Halford Letter and Blanche Mary (King) Letter in Springfield, Massachusetts. Sidney and his wife, Laurel Sherman Letter, were married on October 14, 1961 in the Columbia University Chapel by The Reverend Lawrence McMaster. The love of Sid's life, Laurel, passed away on March 13, 2014.
Sid served in the U. S. Army from 1955 to 1958 as an Administrative Supervisor, Special and Unconventional Warfare Branch, Operations Division, Headquarters of the Commander in Chief, Pacific. While in Hawaii he attended the University of Hawaii West-Oahu where he studied American history and mathematics from 1956 through 1958.
Sid then attended Columbia College, Columbia University, where in 1962 he earned a B.A. degree with a major in French Language and Literature and courses in accounting and economics. He obtained a Masters in Higher Education in 1968 at the Teachers College, Columbia University.
From 1962 through 1965 Sid worked at the Department of Budget and Finance of the General Council of the United Presbyterian Church in the USA in New York City. Sid then became the Executive Assistant to the Director of the Institute of Higher Education, Teachers College, Columbia University, New York until 1968. In 1968 Sid provided analysis of statistical data for the Indiana State Policy Commission on High School Education. From 1968 through 1971 he was the Executive Assistant to the Director of the Higher Education Center, Temple University, Philadelphia, where he was responsible for editing manuscripts for publication, and for budget and finance, office management, statistical analysis, computer programming, and data processing.
In 1971 Sid began work at Dartmouth College as the Associate Registrar in the Office of the Registrar. He worked in the Office of the Registrar for 21 years until 1992 when he sought new challenges in Admissions and Financial Aid, where he remained until his retirement in 1999.
Sid and Laurel were active in the First Congregational Church of Lebanon. After Laurel passed away, Sid became a member of the Lyme Congregational Church. They also were instrumental in enabling the Upper Valley Land Trust to preserve a significant portion of the undeveloped land, known as Starr Hill, that separated much of Lebanon's residential Young Street from Interstate 89, thereby ensuring the existence of undeveloped space to serve as a recreational area.
He is survived by his niece, Cynthia A. Cochrane, of West Jordan, Utah, and local, long-time friends Bill and Kathy Waste, Paula and Bill Cilbirth, and their families.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover, NH. There are no public services planned.
