Stuart Newlands Templetondied on August 3rd 2018. Believing in the Golden Rule, Stuart's lifetime of service was characterized by civility, kindness and humor. He was modest and preferred to listen, but when called upon, he offered wisdom tempered by wit. Above all Stuart was steadfast.

Stuart was born on May 21, 1927 in Glencoe, Illinois to Wallace and Elizabeth Owens Templeton. His father's firm was the oldest family business on the Chicago Board of Trade. In 1945, before graduating from high school, Elgin Academy, he enlisted in the Navy. Ultimately, he proudly received the coveted Navy "Wings of Gold". In 1954 he married Eva Karpowicz of Chicago. 50 YEARS AGO, in 1968, he received orders to teach navigation to the junior NROTC class at Dartmouth College.

Upon retiring from the Navy in 1970, Stuart accepted a position teaching math at Lebanon High School that lasted for almost 20 years. During this time, Lebanon teachers' salaries were lagging the national norm and Stuart's negotiating efforts contributed significantly to an equitable adjustment. Stuart's education included Union College (Sigma Phi Fraternity); the US Naval Post-Graduate School in Monterey, CA; the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio in Monterey, CA (Indonesian); and The University of Georgia, earning a master's degree in math education.

Stuart's sport was swimming for which he received many medals. But the medal treasured most was the one that was awarded to him in 1945 by the United States Coast Guard for saving the lives of two young boys in Lake Michigan.

Stuart's Naval career was comprised of a number of tours of duty including membership in an "all weather night-fighter attack" squadron; a tour in LTA, lighter than air, piloting airships (blimps) in Brunswick, Georgia; and serving as "ship's company" Combat Information Center Officer (CIC) aboard the Forrestal class aircraft carrier USS Ranger (CVA61) and achieving there the special qualification as Officer of the Deck (OOD) underway.

Stuart's unprecedented, successful landing of an airship on an aircraft carrier was a high point in his naval experience. It was part of a challenging air-sea rescue mission for a submariner in a life-threatening situation.

Part of Stuart's community efforts in the Upper Valley included time spent as the Hanover Planning Board Chairman and as Senior Warden at St Barnabas Episcopal Church in Norwich, Vt.

After leaving Lebanon High School Stuart's wife Eva became a Realtor. This provided him with the opportunity to pursue the pleasures of country living: growing vegetables, caring for his apples trees, driving his old truck to get the mail at the Etna post office, attending yoga classes in Doreen's barn, having fun experimenting with Julia Child and Marcella Hazan, chopping wood, walking with his dogs, having cocktails in front of the fire, and making the most delicious waffles ever.

Stuart is survived by his wife Eva and his children Elizabeth K Templeton and Michael K Templeton, his brother Peter, his brother in-law James M. Brooks, many beloved nieces and nephews, and all the special Templeton cousins.

Services will be Saturday, August 11th at 3:00 pm at St Barnabas Church in Norwich, Vermont. Reception to follow at Kendal, 80 Lyme Road, Hanover.
