Susan Van Auken Matless passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on March 27, 2022 at the Lebanon Center in Lebanon.
She was 94.

Sue was born on August 21, 1927 in Glen Ridge New Jersey to Kenneth and Gertrude Van Auken. She was the youngest of two children. Sue grew up in Bloomfield New Jersey and graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1945. In 1948 she met Len on a blind date and a year and a half later they were married. They lived in Cedar Grove NJ and had their first daughter, Sue, in 1951 and their second daughter, Sally, in 1962. They then moved to Liverpool NY and finally settled in Hanover in 1973 where she and Len bought and ran The Hillwinds Shop on Main Street. Sue loved working in the store selling yarn and getting to know everyone in the community. She was a very social and friendly person. After they sold the store Sue went to work at Campions. When Len died in 2003, Sue became active in the Hanover Senior Center, her local chapter of PEO and with the quilting and prayer groups at her church. She will be fondly remembered by many in the community.

She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Len, her brother, Ken, and her parents. She is survived by her daughter Sue and her husband Dave Delmonico (Fairport NY) and their two sons, Chris (Astoria NY) and John (Rochester NY), his wife Amanda and their daughter Rita, and her youngest daughter Sally and her husband, Tim Hunt (Norwich VT).

The family would like to extend their special thanks to all of Sue's wonderful caregivers at the Lebanon Center - we so appreciated all of the love and care Sue received.

Arrangements are being handled by Rand Wilson Funeral Home and a memorial service is being held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hanover on May 14th, 2022 at 11am with a light luncheon afterwards. All are welcome to attend.
